Handguns?
I'm trying to make my mind up which of the handguns to go with and to fully upgrade.

Starting Handgun
+ 5X Headshot Crit
+ Start with it obviously
+ Cheapest and quickest to upgrade
- Max firepower is low
- No good vs head protected enemies

Punisher
+ Can hit through 2 enemies, 5 when maxed
+ Free from Merchant when destroyed 10 or all 15 blue medallions, getting all 15 gives you a free upgrade.
+ Can go through shield enemies.
- Has worst Firepower
- Not very often you can line up enemies to get the weapons benefit

Red 9
+ Best firepower of 6.5
+ Comsumes the least 9mm ammo per fire
- Takes up a lot of inventory space
- Requires stock for better handling which in turn takes up more room
- Slow to fire and reload

Blacktail
+ Very fast gun to reload and fire
+ Has decent high firepower
- Most expensive handgun to upgrade
- Only becomes available once you reach the castle

Red 9 is the most powerful hand gun, the extra space it takes doesn't really matter and it's extremely accurate and ammo efficient with the stock. If you've played this game before or want a challenge you're best off skipping it though, it makes quite a few parts of the game rather trivial.

Giving Red9 2 cons for practically the same thing is unfair (it doesn't require the stock, but if you have it, it's the most accurate one and the firepower kills many human enemies with 1 or 2 shots when maxed, which is a huge advantage; Red9 isn't slow in comparison to really slow guns like the first shotgun or the first sniper rifle, if fully upgraded). Also how does it consume the least 9mm ammo? The only one that shoots more is Matilda (you forgot that one anyway)! The 2 cons for Blacktail are nonsense, no offence.

If you're going to spend for a full upgrade, I don't think standard and Punisher are worth it. I don't know about Blacktail vs. Red9 though. I think it comes down to your playstyle and preference.

Most people tend to skip the Matida because you only get it after you've beaten the game once, you could go for that but you could instead work towards getting the Infinite weapons.

I guess the Red 9 is the king of the handguns.

Yes, it is!

The stock on the Red9 is not a "requirement". I used the Red9 on PS2 for multiple runs through the game to snipe enemies from afar without a stock.

I remember when I first played this on GCN that I max upped the Punisher and it worked well later on with you had multiple enemies but I also didn't rely on the handgun as much as other weapons either.

Red 9 takes up more space but uses less ammo. With stock it has the best accuracy as well, I like to call the Red 9 because of it's higher damage/accuracy a carbine instead of a hand gun. 1-3 shots is all you need vs a majority of common enemies with it. You save a lot of ammo using it.

BlackTail far superior aiming time, might be far deadlier on this version than any other version in the game's history with mouse aiming.

Punisher is also nice, it will go through wooden shields. I just wish it's Damage Per round was higher, I would most likely prefer it over any other, just because of how often you run into a large croud of enemies.

I use the Punisher's younger sister on Resident Evil 5, it has better damager per round on that game, combined with penetration, it is an absolute beast when used right. Again Punisher on RE4, damage is just too low to make it practical outside of getting it for free, and using it's advantages until you get a better gun later.

There is also the Matilda when you beat the game, but in my opinion, it's no good. Choose between the Blacktail, Handgun or Red9. My handgun of choice is the Blacktail for being pratically good for everything. It doesn't matter if you're dealing with diminutive ganados or bosses, it won't fail you.

Red9 is nice because of all that firepower, but doesn't have a very nice handling. That will most likely force you to buy the stock, which takes aditional boxes on your inventory. Also, when it comes to reloading speed and rof, Red9 is not that awesome.

The handgun is a very good choice, especially if you're good with headshots. The trick against head protected enemies is to aim at their knees. You can do a roundhouse kick/supplex if they are on their knees.

I like Red 9 since it's powerful and save ammo.

TMP is another good choice to replace handgun, especially used for headshots.

I love Red 9 so much I've got one of them under my pillow at night cause I dream of ganados
