I had always assumed it was a made up gun, especially with that name.

RE4 dosen't use real life/licensed weaponry like it's predecessors or RE5. However, most guns are heavily inspired by real life guns (Like the Punisher by the Five-seveN, or the Blacktail by the Springfield XD).

The Red9's design seems so unsusual to me that I just asumed it was totally fictitious.

I know this is an old post, but most RE games use real-life weaponry, they just give them fake names.
Like despite the fictional names most weapons are 99% the same as real ones. Red9 Included.
