Where are people saying that? pfft. There's so much misinformation about this port.
Anyway, Its purpose is to disable negative mouse acceleration:

Strafing would ruin the pacing. You are suppose to be slower and get overwhelmed with enemies. You are suppose to get hit and feel like you are about to die. That's part of the atmopshere. If they ever do decide to add strafing (which would be stupid), it better be really slow sidesteps like slow backing up. But you don't need it. You can easily avoid enemies if you use the quick 180 turn function (Q). I literally can run past a mob 10x and avoid getting hit 9/10 times.
On a scale of 1-10, the port is about a 7. There are areas with slowdowns, textures aren't really HD especially by 2016 standards, and the KBM/menus are really well integrated into the PC. The game itself is a solid 10/10.
It is, if you are strictly talking about strafing alone. Developers didn't want to add something that would break enemy AI.
I, however, posted this to get an answer to a simple question – they put in a "modern" control variant in this release, and I was curious to know how is it different from the original.
Makes people wonder how did you enjoyed it back in 2005 in the first place. Reason for these replies from some users.
but I do agree, the keyboard and mouse controls are pretty frickin bad
the ps2 controls were arschgrobbler (german word, so I don't get a bunch of hearts!) because I had a bad controller....the keyboard and mouse takes "bad controller" and proceeds to slap me with my own copy of the game!
*random dark souls chump*: git gud you pleb!
wow.....hitting all the bases including elitist anime community...."pleb"
such a frigid word for people that have a terrible background as just "being for kids"
*sigh*
The "modern" option is under "Aiming Mode"[i.imgur.com]. It doesn't mention, AT ALL, "control scheme". I can't see how anyone would be confused by this.
It does what it is supposed to do.
"Ultimate HD remaster" is, obviously, a marketing name. This is a product after all.
Still, being a remaster doesn't imply that the control scheme should be changed as well. As mentioned, it would ruin the pacing.
You know, It's surprising how much flack I got for asking it. I'm starting to think that the controls are actually fine and there's something wrong with me for having a bad time with them.
As for the pacing, I think it comes mainly from the inability to run and shoot at the same time. Which is what I actually like about this game. I just think that a so-called remaster (for the PC, no less) could do with some more optimization for mouse and keyboard, something like the RE1 remaster did.
But enough of that. I can hear someone behind the door. ♥♥♥♥, why are there so many of them? And what's with all those pitchforks? Jesus, somebody, call the...
