FPS split in half and game runs in slow-mo with ReShade on
i've installed ReShade over the HD project mod but it's slowing my game down significantly for some reason. It happens when i enable the ReShade preset mod, my gpu fan speed and temperature also goes up quite a bit, ReShade puts such a strain on my pc with RE4 and i don't know how to fix it, i've had no issue using it on RE2 and RE3 remake nor in any other game, only on RE4 does it struggle that much. I tried everything that crosses my mind to fix it, i contacted the ReShade mod owner but nothing works, it should be able to run just fine with my rig ( Ryzen 5 3600x / RX 580 8gb / 16gb ), but it's not. Seeking your help

If your fps drops in half, it's because forced double buffered vsync.

Either lower MSAA and/OR resolution (but lol, why) ... or use re_tweaks from the in-game options and disable Vsync.

Vsync is already disabled. And the thing is my FPS aren't perfectly split in half like in a stable way, they are just super low (around 30) as if i was running the game in 4k or some ♥♥♥♥. I managed to get it a bit higher around 45-50 by removing some ReShade effects or lowering the resolution, but my game shouldn't be struggling that much, it's not normal.

try to install re4_tweaks patch,it solved many of the performance issues I had.
After you install the patch you can open its menu with F1.

I used this one for long and worked totally fine except for the camera de-centering in fast paced movements (fixable by pressing ALT once): https://www.nexusmods.com/residentevil4/mods/101

You can get the latest releases here instead: https://github.com/nipkownix/re4_tweaks/releases
I totally suggest you the latest version (1.7.7.6) because that sort of fix the huge problem with the camera from the older versions.

damn...that normally fixed it to me.Did you enable "Disable V-Sync" by pressing F1 that opens the patch menu? There you find optimization settings.

I am really lost here then...probably incompatibilities (for some reasons) of the re-shade with your GPU or they are actually too heavy. Are you using SweetFX reshade? I am using it and it has no issue at all and boost the colors quiet a bit.I have a weaker AMD card so with yours it should work perfectly.
I give you the link, give it a try if you want. You can disable and enable it in-game with F12: https://residentevilmodding.boards.net/thread/5413/negaarmax-sweet-fx-fix
(password of the package: NEGAARMAX)

Remember to delete, backup it too if you want, the other reshade first.
It doesn't enhance the graphics that much but still makes the graphics more clean and boost the colors of the game.
RE4 has a problem with the framerate,if you go under 55fps or less it start going in slow motion and the only fix for that is playing on 30fps,so the other options are lowering the resolution, overclocking the gpu a bit or playing at 30fps if not even SweetFX runs good.Or just give up with the reshades and play the classic graphics.

EDIT: You can also try to install the amazing HD Project mod which enhance the graphics and has lot of optimization in it already, but it's heavier on your hard disk even if maybe on your GPU it could run better. You can download it in different sites but just stick with NexusMods in case.

i appreciate your help man, i'm already running the HD project mod and i've actually already completed the game with it. I think it might in fact be an incopatibility problem with ReShade and my gpu but if that was the case i would've had problems on my other games with ReShade on, which isn't the case. i've noticed that the slow-mo pb gets fixed whenever i cap my game to 30fps, but it runs veeeeery bad and it's barely playable, as a matter of facts why would i bother playing a 15yo game on 30fps (even though i love it a lot). Lowering the resolution helps a bit with the fps but it's still not as good looking as i expect... and i don't think overclocking is the move given how much of a strain does ReShade put on my gpu when running with RE4 (75 C). I could just play the game with HD project and without ReShade but it would be unfortunate cuz the mod is insanely good looking, like i would be amazed to go through my favourite game with these graphics and it's annoying me because it SHOULD work just fine but it's not :/

I am sorry for that, the only real help would be giving up on the HD Project and just using a reshade like the one I suggested you to have good results.I don't know what's wrong with a GPU that good on running this game with the HD Project at 60fps,some incompatibility or driver issues are the only things I can think of at this point.
If you wanna play 60fps I think that is your only hope, just unistall the HD Project and just keep RE4_tweaks and use SweetFX reshade.

No problem man,I would have liked to be more helpful but I am clueless.

Thank you very much, i'm planning on upgrading my GPU soon anyways so i guess i'll just wait until then to play it with full mods on :)

Same issue. I'm on an R11 2080 Super and using some of the reshade presets inexplicably tanks my FPS by like half. It really makes no sense. Something obviously broken, or a compatibility issue with it.

Having the same problem trying to get the game running smoothly on Linux. It seems like my laptop is more than capable of running the game, I think it's an Nvidia driver problem... When I run at 60fps, the game runs in slo-mo. When I run at locked 30fps, the game runs fine but has noticeable visual problems like screen tearing and ghosting.

Update - I was right about the visual problems being an Nvidia driver problem on Linux. For Linux users - try swapping from Wayland to Xorg. This can be accessed by clicking your user to log in, to where it prompts for your password, and a gear will appear in the bottom right. This made the game run flawlessly in 30fps. Yay!

I believe the 60FPS slo-motion problem is happening because my laptop isn't strong enough (hardware skill issue lol) to maintain 60fps. So, the game's time scale slows down as it is tied to the frame rate. Classic programming no-no, but common in older titles.
