You're fine starting with RE4 first. It was my first RE game and I think it holds up pretty well as a stand-alone game. You certainly don't need to have played any prior games to understand the overall plot.
I've only completed RE2, RE3, and RE7 I believe. Don't think I ever beat the first one.
Then play it, good game to start/restart series
Revelations takes place between RE4 and RE5, while Revelations 2 happens after RE6.
It doesn't really matters when you play them since both are standalone games.
The same pretty much goes for both Chronicles games. They're recaps of previous games and those parts aren't considered fully canon. Both however have a number of levels focusing on a new storyline which are canon. You can play them in any order.
Just be sure to do so after Code Veronica if you don't want the stories to be all over the place too badly.
If RE4 has your interest and you're just heading down that path of the modernized RE, 4,5,6, Revelations and Revelations 2 will suit you just fine.
If you're looking to make a slow climb starting from the classics, pick up Resident Evil Remastered!
Let's be realistic. You're going to enjoy one or the other. Lots of us have nostalgia glasses on hence why the classic remakes still sits well with us despite the dated controls.
