What is up with jumping?

I keep having this happen where the game seems unsure if I"m jumping or not. Resulting in a lot of collisions as I try to figure out which combination of A and Right Trigger will result in "over the gap". Different things keep working and then not working.

Also please, for the love of god, when I'm in the air don't reverse my controls. I died so many times by the game trying to adjust my controls based on, I think, the position of the camera.

Releasing the right trigger will make you glide and jump further. Holding it will make you drop and jump shorter. (you can also replay the tutorial to check all control mechanics again)

The game does indeed sometimes reset your control preferences to screen based on launch. I think it may happen with every patch. Just go into the settings and put it back to right left. I don't think this can happen mid jump though. It's possible you turned backwards and that tripped you up? You can either hold the left trigger to freely spin with the right stick to correct for that - or just use the right stick in the air for a spinning trick, which will put you perfectly forward.
