Basically, that part with the segmentation fault is an intro and when it's done playing, you should get into the main menu without anny further input. I think it's supposed to emulate the boot sequence of computers (Checking BIOS, memory, harddisks, etc), only faulty in this case because the ship you're on is... not in good shape at the best of times.
The menu you get into with the function keys is kind of an easter egg you get to by pressing one of a number of keys (IIRC it's only a handful, not even all the function keys) during that boot sequence, just like doing that with a real computer gets you into the BIOS.
Now that boot sequence should only take a few seconds (2-5, maybe) and then put you into the main menu. However, it seems from the aforementioned thread that your antivirus may interfere with that.
