No way to comandeer?
My ship is failing, I've been to 4 systems and about a dozen ships.

No interface, no turret, no mines, nothing I can use to kill infections.
(No relevant ship upgrades either)

Am I missing something? Is there another way to remove an infestation?
My understanding is if I try to vent them into space I render the ship unusable...or can that work?

Airlocks are your friend, just make sure any radiation is contained and not activly spreading.

Once I was like that, luckly found a small ship with 2 airlocks, lured (with the wait and cross fingers tatic) the enemies to a room with an airlock, then vented them.

The only commandeer requirement relating to airlocks is that none of them can be leaking to space -- so as long as it's shut, you're okay. You can potentially irradiate the ship by opening airlocks, but as long as you shut them within a few seconds after opening them (and anything in the room when the airlock is opened gets vented to space instantly), the worst you'll get is blowing up a door or a fuel inlet.

The "seal on airlock x is failing" random event is the one that can potentially render a ship impossible to commandeer. You can delay the event from completing by docking at the affected airlock, though. It will stabilize the seal temporarily and seems to reset the timer, which won't progress until you undock from that airlock.

thanks for the responses. good stuff to know.
To make a ship possible to commandeer you must contain all radiation and close airlocks, explore every room and kill all infestations, make sure the new ship is better tho. make sure it has more p fuel, more scrap, more upgrades ect. the best ships to commandeer are salvage A and barge A ships bc they have huge scrap capacity and often many (2-3) upgrade slots. in a pinch though medical and millitary ships are good too, somtimes coming with cannon or decontaminator upgrades as standard, but have poor scrap capacities.

I have never been able to accumulate more than about 15 scrap, so what use is a large scrap capacity? I keep having to spend it fixing things (like drones) to replace the ones I accidentally vent to space or get slimed.

Get better at the game. Get more efficient at your scrap expenditure.

Recently ran into a Military A that had only 1 infection on it with the leapers. Loaded up a shield/turret drone and did a sweep and clear, full aggro assuming it was swarm/droids/leapers. Had a drone with 2 sonics loaded up just in case it happened to be slime. It had 75 scrap capacity, 7 p-fuel, and 3 ship upgrade slots. All around a good ship, still using it on my current run which is the longest I ever had yet. I keep finding ships with more scrap but 5 p-fuel or 1 ship upgrade slot etc. and so far just haven't found anything close to beating the all around goodness of the ship I'm in. Repaired it's video feed once already, glad the dev added that option for 20 scrap. Totally worth it for a situation like I'm in where everything else you run into seems to be a downgrade.
