Guide to starting off in Survival Mode
As some already know I've written up an introductory guide to survival mode. It specifically covers progression through tier 1. I've created this thread to make it easier to discuss any questions related to the guide or early survival mode progression. I'll try to keep this updated when changes are made.

I've updated the AI mover section to include a few screenshots. I've been holding off playing any more until the crafting and smelting are in place to see how that plays out before I'm swimming in resources. After that I'll add in sections for them as well as detail a few of my mining sections to show off a few examples large scale automation.

With the addition of smelting and crafting in v1.6 comes a new section to the guide! I've also updated a few details in the other sections to reflect the balance changes that came with the patch.

Added an appendix detailing some of the numbers/math for machines which may aid in automation purposes.

Quick question. How do you get a tier 2 constructor or tier 2 items? I'd like to get solar panels, but that's classified as a tier 2 item.

There are no restrictions on tier 2 items beyond getting the tier 2 resources. Currently there is nothing stopping you from just going down below the first cavern layer and collecting them. In a future patch the extreme cold of the first cavern will require the suit heater upgrade to explore it safely.

The tier 2 items are found on a separate tab of the crafting station selected with the different color tier buttons. As was recently summarized in a tweet the crafting page colors are: AI movers = T3 = Blue. ARTHER upgrades = Cyan. Suit Upgrades = far right pink. T2 = Green.

Tried what steveman0 said, but there was no observable change at all. I also tried making a new game, still no change. I also tried starting it up in 32 bit mode instead of 64. Is there something stupid I'm forgeting? Do I need to have all the resources before being able to see the items, or should I just reinstall and hope for the best? Thanks for the quick response before. :)

Oh I think I might know... Are you playing the standard release version or the Steampipe beta? I don't know that the standard release version has the tier 2 stuff yet. I believe that is still only available in the pre_release_staging beta build.

Well if I do have the standard release. Do you know how I would go about getting the Pre_release_staging beta build?

In you game library right click the game, click properties, select the betas tab, and opt in to the build. Due not that as a build build it is subject to bugs so it is best to backup your world before playing and expect things to change for better or worse with each patch.

Just wanted to note that I have updated the guide to include researching and polished up some old sections that have changed a bit with version 1.8 so it should be relevant for all new players.

I'd like to place a second smelter down in my mines for automaic smelting, do I need a T2 build gun to reclaim it? I don't wan't to place it and regret it.
