Shafts, lifts and minecarts.
A DJ not once said that he didn't like that the players are building big vertical shaft. But all the modes of vertical transportation, including elevators require it. Only much later (minecarts) the player needs to build something else.

I think the game needs more diagonal transport early in the game. So player can upgrade ladders. What can it be?
For player: diagonal lift/platform, escalator, ropeway?
Some for ore: cargo ropeway?

Think you mean you want diagonal t0-t2 conveyors?

Well, no. I am speaking mostly about player movements. At the begining palyer have no motivation for not-vertical corridors. And then he stuck with vertical shafts.

About ore: conveyors are too convenient here. You can split them at any point, can build them gradually, can bend path etc. What i am thinkning that for cargo should exist (relative) long-distance transport with different properties. (Good for caverns, cheaper bot less flexible, cheaper per tile but neet time, resources and place to set up)

And the player should have the initiative to change transportation somewhere between vein and surface. It will make bases more eleborate.

In other hand, removing conveyor ability to go up the wall and introducing ramp-style conveyor node should work. But I suppose it will break too much of existing game mechanics.

Blood would run in the streets ;). Although I would not mind conveyors placed on a wall actually looki g like a real life vertical ones instead of the gravity defying looking one we have now.

Parachutes I have sometimes imagined I could use. Some kind that actually like doesn't need much room to open etc.

It is still 'straight down'. The question is what use to avoid that.

I would like a diagonal cargo lift, like this :)

It is slow. Nobody will use it.

It seems proper term is 'material ropeway'. They are sufficiently(youtube playlist) expressive, useful in caves and lowtech[www.lowtechmagazine.com] to be T0-T1. And I hope they will encourage players to spread in caves instead of building shafts. You don't need build them tile by tile.

Not very likely to happen, those are too difficult to program in, and they would be too useful and obsolete all other transport in the game immediately. </sarcasm>

But really, everything in the game is vertically oriented. There is only one horizontal digging tool and even that is hopelessly useless. Diagonal digging tools, zero. Diagonal and free-target power transfer, zero. And on top of that the player only knows the vertical coordinate. How can you do anything non-vertical with that? Only very laboriously, that's how.

What do you mean by rails? Mithious will be working on tracked lifts at some point - he's mentioned it as something he'll tackle after leaving EA.

Rails, the ability to place blocks that alllow another block to move up and down them, sorta like the minecarts we have now but with hopefully any block implementing IRail or whatever they wish to I call it.
