Giant robot spider?
Its been following me around since i started my world? Is there a point? Does it do anything?

Yes, it attacks the mobs when they start attacking your base. It doesn't do much damage but it at least shows you the direction they are coming from. It can easily go far from the base so keep an eye on it when the attack is announced.

when do mobs start attacking? im 5 hours in and havent seen any

Build a threatscanner. When it goes above 100%, attacks will come.
