Are slime farms a thing?
I think I remember people recently saying things about slime farms, but I'm not sure.

If they do exist, are they practical/useful, and if so how would I go about making one?

You have to build a Slime Attractor, attach a hopper to it filled with rotting organics to activate it (and make sure to keep it stocked), and make sure to dig a 15 or so meter deep pit underneath it so that slimes fall to their deaths, using a hopper below on vacuum mode to suck up all of their drops. From there, it's up to you what to do with 'em. Really useful for getting Perfect Eyes and Pristine Glands without spending hours running around blasting slimes.

Wow! DjArcas went ham on adding content in the short time I was gone. He's a 1-man developer powerhouse

15m drop huh. Might be overkill to use a cargo lift for that unless I intend to transfer the Pristines and Perfects down to the cold caves where I can preserve them cheap with frozen hoppers.

Question: Does Mass Storage preserve bug bits? Would be cheaper than using frozen hoppers.

Only ruined parts spoil and need to be kept in a cryohopper to prevent spoilage. Pristine parts never spoil regardless of storage method.
Myr Jul 8, 2016 @ 11:17am
Ruined parts only start to spoil when they are on the ground OR when they are in a non-cooled hopper.
  • They don't spoil while being transported (100% sure about pipes and falcors, not so much about conveyors)
  • while they are inside a recombinator without power
  • while they are stored inside Mass-storage.

Best way I found is to pump all your organic parts into a mass-storage inside the frozen caverns and then sorting out your ruined parts towards a cryohopper connected to a recombinator.
Pristine and recombined organics towards a new more permanent storage and your spoiled parts (if any) to your slime farms.

So is there a way to automatically produce a specific pristine? Say for automated armor piercing warheads?
Yes. Take the ruined parts to the cold Cavern, setup a cryo setup, then you will be able to craft them from the recombined matter.

But the MP can't make stingers. It's a hand recipe.

FALCORS with an advanced filter: lots of threat gives lots of stingers.

Well yeah that, but I think there should be a way to automatically make them from recombined parts

I am playing on vanilla and having difficult time with slime farming. As far as the strategic goes it is pretty obvious. Make a hole with a height enough to kill them bastards, with an 3x3 area so there is space to put a slime attractor at the center and the storage hopper on vacuum right beside it to such in the loot.

Slimes are attracted correctly and die by the fall and have the items stored in the hopper. All wonderfull. Except that not , because the drop rate for the organs that are used by the attractor is so hard to come by that this setup does not really work, so making the sttractor useless altogether with the fact that this type of game is about automating things out.

So Am I missing something? , and for some reason all the slimes like an specific spot right beside the hole for mining copper, weird those slimes are indeed.

Also I noticed that the items it drops 2 of them one which seems a half stomach and the other is the full thing unharmed which is used tor enriched coal machines, but it is the same items basically in the lore of the game is it not? just that one is damaged and can't be used for crafting while it is used to get spoiled to work in the slime attractor. So in a sense the intact stomach should also get spoiled or maybe a way to get it to spoil so the attractor could use it.

Anyway I imaging that should be a mod or something that get this thing balanced in a way that slime farm is possible, as far as I can tell slime farm is not a go on vanilla version of the game. really sad!

the half stomach is ruined phosphorescent gland. the full is pristine.

one example of the OP usefulness of pristine is the organic power storage. takes 8 i believe, but it is the largest single-block power storage in the game. and you can access it early in the tech tree, so all this advantage really requires is farming those glands.

pristine is totally different from ruined etc. pristine is ready to use in crafting. the others require mods etc. to be crafting-viable.

personally i play lucrative mobs as those drop all kinds of fun stuff -- both useful, and garbage.

the useful, well, the use will be obvious once you go far enough in the tech tree.

and the garbage, will actually, ironically, make the game more fun. once u know the whole tech tree and can advance to the final tier ores, weps, etc. you will find your overall capabilities are much too powerful to just beeline the game-winning tactics, and having to put extra effort into sorting garbage, etc., will, again ironically, make the game more fun. at least i find it so. ymmv.

although... you won't actually know the useful from useless until you progress thru the tech tree, so it's kind of a catch-22. but ... overall the game will supply you with infinite resources, so you have time to figure this all out. there is no outright "losing" unless you have configured the game settings for that, which, as a new player, you most likely have not.

build a slime attractor, put a cryohopper next to it, power the hopper and the attractor, dig a 5x5x1 deep area beneath it, and a 3x3 15 deep pit below that. on the bottom layer, dig a 1 cube pit in the center and put a cryo hopper in that set to vacuum. now figure out how to move rotten items to the upper hopper, which will feed the attractor. feed the bottom hopper to the cold caverns for storage.

Now rinse and repeat spacing them about 16 to 32 blocks from each other. They double as wasp drop collection.
