I agree on the sloped conveyors though, I never use them. I think it would be bad to take out vertical conveyors, it would take too much room to make sloped all the way down to your iron at -80 early game.
Matter transmitter are useful for a few reasons. First is they are quick, a normal matter transmitter will move 300 items/minute, lots of power but very quick considering that's the same speed of even a transport pipe on rapid or double the speed of a transport pipe on normal difficulties. Matter transmitters also only hold a single item in them and can move that single item 64m forward, great for expensive items like a plasma cutter head that you don't need/want 64 stored, 1 on each conveyor. They are also cheap, mynock immune, and work fine in the cold and toxic caverns. Personally I don't use them often because they are power hungry but for what they do, they do it great.
And matter movers are a different beast than belts all together. For one they start out moving items twice as fast as tubes and go up from there.
Here is stats from the wiki so I don't know how acurate they are:
http://fortresscrafte.wikia.com/wiki/Matter_Mover
But as you can see they can move crazy amount of items.
They also cause your factory to react faster/smoother because of the near instant travel of items.
The single matter mover sends things a long ways for the cost of them. The first and second one are okay but the rest are kinda crap for doing long distance to be honest. Those ones can move a ton but they are feasable only for short distances.
They also don't drain as many of your computer resources as belts/tubes do for the same distance increasing the performance of your world.
Bottom line is that once you can make enough power to power the OET you should be putting in at least the single matter mover lines:

I only use them for distrubting items to a hopper directly stacked on another hopper.
That's even more than I thought LOL. Yeah hungry, hungry beasties those mattermitters.
