Is there a way to stop adding items automatically to hotbar when picked up?
Is there a way to stop the following behavior?

1) Pick up an item [ex. glowshroom]
2) Item is now in the first empty slot in the hotbar
3) Remove item from hotbar and inventory
4) Pick up another item [leafy dangler?]
5) Repeat forever and ever until you kill yourself

It's such a weird system, to have these junk items for which there is almost no purpose, especially not to carry around on your person, but they still clutter the hotbar and must be manually removed every single time you pick one up.

There has never once been a circumstance in which I wanted to place a glowshroom, but this extends further to literally everything. If I pick up some old or unused machines from a storage crate, they appear on my hotbar. If I manually mine a block or two of ore in the way of my tunnel, it appears on my hotbar. I understand that once something is on your hotbar, it will not re-appear on your hotbar, but why do I have to dedicate an entire 5+ hotbars to random rock types, ores, and junk items, JUST to avoid having these items clutter up the hotbars I actually use?

So I ask, is there a way to disable this? Willing to modify game files, run a script or command, or installing a mod if this is possible somehow. (Also willing to accept suggestions on how other people deal with this issue)

What I do is relegate each toolbar to a purpose. For example, F1 is decorative blocks, F2 is for the smelted bars. F3 is for conveyors, F4 is storage items, F5 is power related. F6 is machines, F7 is random things which doesn't fit anywhere else. Later, F7 becomes minecarts.

I start customizing each toolbar from left to right starting from the very beginning of the game. So to me, it doesn't matter what the toolbars auto-pop with, I just overwrite it when new things unlock.

At the beginning of the game I will put ores on F2 because most of the time you need to put ores into the CPH smelter and less need to put bars somewhere. Then I transition the ores to bars once I get the theifs going.

As Compugasm says, you do have 7 toolbars of 10 items each, so that is quite a lot of buttons. However you really want to organise the toolbars so that you won't have to scroll up and down and/or add items from you inventory constantly.
Just as Compugasm I usually dedicate a few slots for ores and bars, generally faster for me to just switch toolbar instead of getting dizzy looking at my inventory.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I guess my issue is that I don't like filling up my hotbars with stuff i dont even use, so i prefer those slots to remain empty until I come across something that fits my hotbar ogarnization schema in that slot!

For example, currently, I have a transport hotbar (slow belts, fast belts, pipes, teleporty matter things, etc), a power hotbar (mk 1, 2, 3 power storage things, mk 1 2 3 laser power transmitter things)

But as it goes, I don't QUITE have an entire bar's worth of stuff on most of these bars, so whenever I pick up a bunch of gunk, it fills in the spots in-between the other things and makes me sad :(

Someone messaged me to suggest the following method, and it works beautifully! Simply fill the slots you wish to remain "empty" with a neutral-looking item in all the slots. I chose lithium plates, and now my hotbars look like this: https://imgur.com/gTkri5h
Instead of like this: https://imgur.com/bwAwTAz

Thank you, random person who messaged me!

Your hotbar is shaping up to look a lot like my #2 which is power distribution related machines.

I have mk1 through 3 LPT, then mk1 through 4 batteries, then solar panel, PTG, and finally induction charger.

I wonder if a player can share their hotbar set up as a mod?

Try hitting equals "=".
Set up bars ahead of time, note a "?" will appear if you do not yet know the block type.
Experiment.
Enjoy.

I actually have the reverse issue! Not sure if it's a bug or something I am doing wrong. Occasionally when I middleclick an object in the world (duplicate button) and start placing more of it, my action bar gets all weird. Sometimes icons disappear and become empty slots (even though I have those items in my inventory).

Also, many times I use the middleclick button it only duplicates the item for only one instance (placing one block), afterwards it just randomly picks an item on my hotbar and I start building those :s

@Ecclesia86: That almost sounds like your mouse wheel is scrolling up/down randomly according to the symptoms you describe, is that at all possible, have you noticed such behavior in other games/apps with your scroll wheel?

Ah, interesting. Thanks for that, I didn't know about that function.

No, no such problems in other games. Also, that would only explain the second part of my problem I guess? Scrolling with mousebutton shouldn't empty slots on my inventory bar I think.

Right, I knew it was a complete stab in the dark and most likely would not be your issue but brought it up because I couldn't think of anything else.
Good luck finding the real cause and solution though.

Just ignore it! if the hotbar is empty then you're not using it anyway! The junk item can occupy the slot endlessly until you actually have something to assign to it, at which point it's no different than an empty slot
