BFL replacement?

Now that the BFL is mothballed, what is the equivalent? The BFL is a great way to big out a long reasonable-sized hallway.

Mothballed doesn't mean it can't be used, other than BFL i guess workfloor excavators but I find the BFL better in some circumstances. Excavators do have the added benefit if you use the MK1 of not eating your ore.

Unless I've missed something, excevators can't build horizontal tunnels, can they?
I realize mothballed is still accessible, but it has a connotation that its not supposed to be used anymore.

Your right excavators can't dig out "tunnels" but if you drop a few down spaced out in a row they can clear a large area, just leave them to it and come back later, of course you will end up with a very "wide" tunnel using these. BFL is obviously a much better way of digging out long tunnels, it also digs out a higher ceiling which is less claustrophobic.

Don't worry about it saying its not supposed to be used. Use any machine you like or find useful. Its still a perfectly good machine it just isn't getting any further "support" developement wise.

I agree with the sentiment of Toger. The game feels like its missing something without a horizontal tunneling machine.

Auto Excavators can't dig horizontaly. The graphics including the preview for where it will dig goes horrizontal but they will only dig above them.

As long as a patch doesn't break the BFL it's still the best choice for making horizontal tunnels.

workfloor excavator can build tunnel but they will be short (33 for mk1 and mk2 and 60+ for mk3)
You just have to block him so he doesn't break too much

Just research Mothballed if you need it.

If you don't mind mods, Shadow's Machines mod has an improved excavator that can dig in any direction to a configurable distance, and configurable height and width.

I'll just reseach mothballed; I'm not clear on why BFL was mothballed though if there's no equivalent functionality elsewhere.
