Exploring can cause new hiveminds to appear. NEARLY ALWAYS they will spawn some distance from your base. Any that don't can be quickly dealt with via explosives
I saw agitated in the patch notes, but a significant portion of the discussion topics talk about them multiplying; so I just assumed that they started spawning more when they got mad.
That makes a lot of sense - this one was far from my base (base being CPH, I take it) so it wasn't some freak RNG. I had just made it down to the bottom of the toxic caverns, so that was probably far enough away to trigger the spawn if it's distance based.
back then patch notes didn't say what happens to hiveminds and since there were more and more hiveminds... people assumed that they multiply
