A simpler option would be to press esc when in a world. Then press multiplayer and then host. Ingame hosting works, but not as well as a dedicated server.
For hosting multiplayer to work you need to know your IP. Google whatsyourip and you will get that. You also need to make sure that all your security measures (firewalls, antiviruses) allow FortressCraft to send and recieve information. Using VPN clients is not allowed!
There are various things that can cause multiplayer to not work, the most noticable packet losses. Packet losses depends on your hardware and is not limited to FortressCraft alone, but with the massive data traffic FortressCraft uses, you will notice it more than with normal internet usage. Using a WIFI network will increase the chance of packet losses considerably.
All this said, try to host and then tell us any errors you get, along with server logs, player logs and specifications on your and your friends internet and computers. You will likely get help quite fast if you provide enough information.
Then he has to enter your IP address in the field that pops up.
After that, click on your IP address in the list and press the join button.
