we all had these when we started, and there may be some people who would suggest other weapons.
but this should help you to get started and build up your own opinion and playstyle.

He said he wanted to do long distance shots. I took that into consideration on my recommendations.
"....I wan't something that can take out deer from a long distance and can also take down moose from further away than the starter shotgun....."
so tmo, anything that is more reliable for deer as the 243 with its 4x scope (~100m) and something that kills a moose from more then 50m.
in my guides i advise the .300 magnum to new players!
it has a wide range of permitted species, and good power for most, depending on the distance.
it can use the 2-10x zoomable scope that also fits the 243, what will make that rifle more usefull (its a good one actualy XD not just a starter gun), and the 5.5-22x what will help newbees with the spotting.
yes it has already been discussed several times that others have other opinions about a starter weapon.
correct!
later in the players progression i would also advise the 340 weatherby for the "bigger" species.
that does also use the already mentioned scopes and is a good way to start until one builds up his own style and preferences!
They are right with the 200. g what they choose, If they would choosen the 250g we didn`t could shoot Red Deer, Wildboars and Feral Hogs! Real exactly that side and you will understand this. 340. minimum allowed animals are Deer like Red deer, it aren`t meant Whit Tails and Muly`s. Stags boars and hogs, and same like those we could only hunt with that caliber if they would chossen the 180g bacasue for bears and that biggness you need 200 up++!
