a very good shotgun would be the 12GA pump action - you can use the free 12GA ammo that renews every start of a hunt.
for rifles its more about liking.
for most species, you can use the 9.3x74. but for me, the penetration over distance drops alot.
my choice was the .300 magnum. not for the small ones and the waterbuffalo, but covers alot of species.
i use most the .243, the .300, the .340 and for rabbits and birds the 12 pump.
that covers all species ingame and is fine with sniping them at distance, without that you have to search to long for your prey.
side note:
most of my shots are less then 100m so its not only the distance. so close the rifles do alot of damage, and often take them down on the spot.
Second choice 12g pump action. Also free ammo. Also reasonably fast. 6 shots.
Both can be used with the slug scope and when loaded with scope and slugs are as effective as any rifle out to 70 or 80 meters.
Rifles are another matter. There is no one rifle because you need probably at least 3 to cover the full range of permitted game.
Rifle, I love the .300 - but you have to accept it is a single shot. That said, I do not regret buying it. Just make that one shot count.
But honestly, I kill a ton more with my tenpoint crossbow than anything else in game. You can take anything with it - it's pretty quite and does't spook much past 40 yards most of the time; you can put a little scope on it, and shoot prone. Unless I really need to reach out there and touch something, I'm usually using that. (Plus it covers a lot of the missions for bow/xbow). I love the 300/tenpoint combo in the field.
you can use them while roaming the maps and hope for a call back, to have a basic direction where to find someting.
some will aproach you very often, like red fox and most deer/elk. for those you can lay on an eleveated position with propper view and have a safe shot.
if you hunt bigger elk/moose, and others that suit the .340 ammo, i would buy that too.
2-10 and 5.5-22 scopes fit, and its amazing how it drops even bison and waterbuffalo on the spot.
will be enough Gm$ left to buy a caller, like the Jack Rabbit Caller. that works for severall well paid small predators and is totaly worth the coin to spend.
I only use a shotgun for elk comps that call for it. I just use the free single shot 12ga with slugs. Works good.
If i'm in a mountain man mood i'll just use the caplock for everything but the bison.
