30-06 in my humble opinion; hits much harder I believe and is a well respected rifle in this game.

Just a side note the 30-30 isn't Permitted for elk.

I Have the 30-06 and absoultely love it, kept it with iron sights as this means you can easily get off another shot or 2 at a fleeing animal.

30-06 can hunt everyhting, the 30-30 can't be used vs the game's larger pray. I have both and I like both, but the 30-06 is just devestating. It can drop just about anything with one shot without a big chase almost reguardless of where you hit it.

The 30-06 has always been my go-to rifle. Accurate & powerful - some of the shots I've pulled off (mostly using open sights) have been amazing; 6 shots in the spout, a fast reload rate. As has been said, it'll either drop every animal it's ethical for on the spot or wound them enough that you shouldn't have to worry about a lengthy track.

Truth be told, if it's a choice between the two lever-actions, I'd prompt you to buy the 30-06 due to the broader range of quarry you can hunt with it :)

With the 06 you shouldn't NEED a second or third shot
