What is this?
I've had a scan through the weapons to see what are permitted for Bison and not. There's quite a few not.
I'm just creating a short list of ethical weapons to put here - and to discuss:
ALLOWED:
.454 pistol
47/70 lever action
8x57 Anschutz
Mauser K98k
7mm rifles
.300 Win Mag
NOT ALLOWED:
30-06
.303
.308
.270
6.5mm
.50 muzzle loader
Quick and dirty wikipedia suggests that in a rifle the bar is set at a minimum of 2800 ft lbs to be ethcal (that's the 45/70) whereas good old .303 makes about 2500 ft lbs compared to 3000 ft lbs for the 8x57. I guess that the exclusion of the .303 is therefore not an oversight. Sorry!
Now see my post on the ethical weapon system...
So if you think you can hunt Bison with a .303 or a 30-30 successfully - go for it; if you spend a lot of time chasing wounded animals or getting attacked in a stampede then that's also your choice
No No allow that, It just makes it go into a rage and kills you instead
NB - has anyone been killed by a Bison yet? One bit of wiki I read said they were the second most deadly animal after the brown bear in North America...
Why? ask them.
In real life I worked as a culler for the forest service and as a private meat hunter.
Here in N.Z. I have shot red deer and pigs with a .222 and later upgraded to .223. I have also shot Red deer with .22lr and .22 magnum. There are no restrictions here at all.
I never had any problems getting ( thousands ) of clean kills with either .222 or .223 and the few I shot with the 22LR or 22 magnum were oppotunistic but were all 1 shot kills.
But if I was to go to America or Europe, many States and Countries would not allow me to hunt with these calibres, and even within The US each state has its own interpretation of permitted weapons.
Most U.S. legislators seem to be tied into the ft lbs energy scales while European legislation appears to base their limits on the sectional densities of the projectile.
The EHR hunting maps are modelled as a 'private hunting reserve' and as such the limitations on weapons considered ethical are set for each species by the reserve administration, often refered to as DOC, a grumpy old 'virtual' coot who has no knowledge or experience with Real Life hunting practices.
The other overiding factor is that permitted species is tied very closely to sales of weapons so that in order to hunt some species you will have to buy the appropriate weapon.
This is in turn tied to the company profits and their supposed financial ability to continue to grow and expand the game with more reserves and new animals.
But dont worry, you are not alone in your disatisfaction and I can remember back in 2009 making strong argument for allowing .270 to be permitted for Roosevelt Elk.
They didnt listen then even though the ballistics and energy of a 270 using a 180 gr projectile is equal under 200 yrds .. then greater after 200yrds, than that delivered by a 30.06 180 gr projectile.
But then of course the in game load for the .270 is a 130 gr bullet and I would have to agree that it would be a tad light for Elk.
Its their game and their reserve and they make their own rules. I doubt if anything has changed since.
These days I no longer care. I just buy the appropriate weapon and play the game by their rules.
