Thanks! Haha...right by the lodge. Tryin' it!
problem (for me) is.. they are so easy spooked
They don't flee far, a bit like Roe deer. If you are lucky, and the terrain and wind are favourable, you can crawl through the grass and follow them.
The biggest problem in calling them in is the waiting: "Did it spook?", "Is it coming in or ignoring the caller (or is it asleep)?", Did it move away from the original call and is now out of range of the caller?" They come in real slow. I allow at least 1 minute/10m distance to the last known call and add a bit more. I've had a few instances when I though they weren't coming in, switched the caller off and they were real close. One was right under and behind the tree stand(!), another called loudly around 15m or so to the side of the rock I was perched on, and was out of sight. I've had two where I got down from the tree stand thinking they were spooked/long gone and then noticed them in the trees 30-40m away. Another I was busy glassing all the approaches thinking it's never going to come in, and there's a low howl and it's standing on the ambush spot. They don't come in straight and can surprise you if the terrain is not favourable.
At least they're not as bad as Lynx where two male moose spawn right behind you and knock you off the rock you were perched on, just as it's nearly in and you were lining up the shot. I would swear that the moose on Hemmeldal have the title of 'Noble Guardians of the Lynx' if I didn't know better.
i tend to roam around and not wait for a specific species or animal. only if they are part of the daily mission i try (at least XD does not always work out, but mostly).
those dailys are currently my way of choosing a map, i have enough other things to hunt there, once im done with that.
atm im still on the 2 summer event missions, and lucky me, i got the bobcat as the first from middle tower in loggers XD
i had some good chances with bobcats, but didnt carry the .243 with me (or any suitable weapon).
lynx are weired too ;) i often have the foxes comming and when i turn around, prone on a stone, i hear the fleeing noise of the lynx 20m away :(
doesnt matter much, its still a game and i enjoy the hunt, if im successfull or not.
however, thx for the tipps, and glad we could help Jack.
They're extremely quiet so we have to keep our eyes open, frequently look around for them, and spot them coming in or they can come in and pass through right under or within 3 meters of us and we don't even know they're there. There's a lot of times when I had the e-caller on the only reason I knew they were near was because I got spotting info that told me they were there.
got no real problem with them, i just dont enjoy either sitting around or following one in stop motion style for 2hours.
but yes, sometime you turn around and see one just a few meters away, in the moment it starts running ;)
i am aware that there are several ethical weapons - that i mostly dont have, or better dont care to have.
the .243 is not only a beginner rifle, its a very relyable one for me too ^^
got it only to lvl15 yet, but it will drop a fox on 250m.
i would have to lvl any other rifle again to get as steady as that now.
about archery... well, i am a little dissapointed, but it seems logical, the second part i mean.
i bought the parker and noticed that it spooks quite well.
tried some on deer and whatever came to close, but as mentioned, one gets spooked and takes all others with them.
on bushrangers i could see how an axis ran off, took the whole heard with it and on the way any kangaroo, hog or goat. could have just shot it with the same results, and a faster kill.
also, one hog got an arrow in the knee... oh no, sry. that was an elderscolls guard XD
no serious now - i shot one hog in the guts and it ran for ages, bleeding at 90%, 88%, 85%.... the .340 would have been like 90%, 75%, 50%... in the same time. so the arrow hinders the animal bleeding out - even the .300 would have killed that hog faster.
no thx, not going to sit around for an hour and lure a bobcat in, just to see it run.
in 4 days is my 464th daily, then ill get the engraved .17 - looking forward to that, for rabbits and such ;)
but thx for the input, i just dont have all guns with me all the time ^^ i take what i think to need in 2 - 3 hours of one hunt, per day ;)
not a fallout game where you carry 4 different guns, grenade & rocket launchers and a fatman for mini nukes all the time XD
We have the encumbrance capacity to carry all the weapons and gear we need for all animals on every reserve. Consider adjusting your inventory so you're prepared.
Doc told me that .357 magnum was unsuitable for Snowshoe Hares. The scopes looked the same, so how was I to know?
.243 is a great varmint rifle, especially as ammo is free. Any beginner lamenting it's lack of power, go get yourself a predator caller and have fun trolling foxes and coyotes all day. While deer might laugh at the "'tis merely a flesh wound" of the .243, the canines won't.
If loadouts is a thing then just drag a tent with you. I usually set out with the callers and set off with weapons to deal with anything I encounter, but spawns being as they are the hunt often dynamically changes. I can't resist bobcats when they call and tell me where their current turf is, especially the males since they usually pay 100+, so the challenge is on. I don't bother with random calling as they're too sensitive and crafty to take from a random direction. If I know where the cats are, then I set up the ambush appropriately, whether it's a tree stand/rock or a similar vantage point, ideally with as much field of fire as possible, so I can watch them coming in.
As for hogs/boar they can run for miles. I think I had one that ran 500m+ before he keeled over from his "lung/intestine/body/fleeing" shot. They don't run as far with the Reverse Draw Xbow. That weapon is a complete pig destroyer.
I choose the .17 over other weapons for small game because:
- it's significantly quieter than other weapons. There's a chance animals 120m+ away won't get spooked.
- Ammo boxes have 50 rounds (vs 10 rounds in a box for others)
- It's ammo is significantly cheaper than others (.74 gm$ per round vs 6.8 gm$ for others)
- the .17 and it's ammo takes up less capacity space than all the others (except Xbow pistol),
- it's ammo is significantly cheaper than other ammunition,
- carrying both HMR and HV we can shoot any small game animals we might run in to.
i dont have a problem with the inventory space/carry capacity, its already more then enough.
dont think a real hunter hast 50Kg of items in his backpack ^^ so, i think 2 rifles/shotgun and the sidearm is more then enough.
on top also all the callers and ammo boxes, or other stuff you may like.
i just dont play that way ^^ we all have a slighly different way to aproach this, some are archivement hunters, others replace real life with it for several reasons.
i play one hunt a day, exept when my daily leads me to a place where i cant complete things like the summer fiesta now. then i start a new one on a according map.
on this one/1 hunt a day, between 1,5 - 3 hours, i use what i choose at the start. i dont carry a tent or fast travel around much to several preinstalled tents (max one per hunt if the area i am in, is realy empty).
so if i choose to hunt boars/hogs and some deers, i dont take a gun with me for birds or rabbits or fox ... you name it.
then of course i stumble over a bobcat or fox and have to ignore it - its NO problem!
and true, following a bobcat in his tracks is quite exhausting and can be dissapointing at the end. so i take the chance but dont force anything, if i have the gun for it with me.
a boar/hog shot in intestines with a .340, wont run very far ^^ as mentioned, even a .300 from relative close distance will kill quite fast. so no, a bow is not my weapon of choice.
i dont need to have all species covered, i want the game to suprise me. there is no loss if i cant shoot all and everything that moves ^^ just finding and watching them is already joy.
im playing to distract myself from real life, and i certainly dont take myself and my skills to serious. i dont need a challenge or goal.
its only a game, a sandbox, unpredictable spawns that make every hunt different. easy to learn and hard to master, simple mechanics that have an impact on your success - or no success XD
i thank you for your suggestions, i do read alot to learn from others too, but i still do my daily roaming in my own way.
good hunting and have fun while at it ;)
