Intresting that we're not alllowed to hunt Moose with .223 but it clearly drops in one shot therefore no suffering.
The thing is the .223 isn't powerful enough to get a lungshot on the flank. However the .243 and .270 will effectively get the lungs from the flank, but those weapons are illegal to shoot moose with, even though they have enough power to do the job >:/
Derpy - nice vid and it makes me ask this question:
Proposal:
The harvest value of an animal replaces the Unpermitted hits system.
If you want to shoot rabbits with 9.3 - please do so but your harvest value will be reduced a lot due to pelt/meat destruction. But still counts as a kill.
If you want to try moosing with a .223 - please do so but if your harvest value is reduced if you don't make a clean kill.
Introduce a small $gms reward for each 100% harvest value, but $gmsrewards drop if you either blow your target to bits or fail to drop it on the spot. If you lose your kill, or don't finsih it off - a fine!!! This can just be based on the harvest value. Allow players to go into negative $gms equity if neccessary.
Using the best weapon for a species plus placing the shot for quickest kill and pelt/meat preservation results in the best rewards - or to use another phrase, rewards ethical hunting.
Some weapons should remain unpermitted against larger species - the one I can think of is .22 air rifle which can stay as it is plus the shotgun birdshot/buckshot rules stay as is?
Why do I think this? In the UK, hunting with any sort of bow is not permitted, so I am amused by the game rules (USA orientated?) that say it's wrong to drop a moose with a .223, but it's ok to crossbow them which often involves a lengthy track and a second shot sometimes.
Another related thought - ammo costs are not real; why don't many people go foxing with a 9.3 etc? It's expensive when compared to a .223 or a .243. How about a set price for a reload but the number of rounds you get varies with price in real life? So 9.3 lover like me get 4-5 rounds per refill, .22 air rifle nutters get 20 etc? If you're a member, your free ammo is still there but if you're using 9.3 you get 3 x 4 rounds, if you're on .223 you can have 3 x 12 rounds or whatever the going rate is. Workable? Desirable?
Derpy - partial threadjack. If you wish I'll remove and place on a new thread good sir.
It's all good. I like open discussions.
I would like to see that for the most part. I would love earning gm$ per kill. With that system The Hunter would actually fit the F2P model.
EW is based in Sweden, and from what I understand bow hunting is legal in most european countries. But keep in mind the permission system is based on what makes them money... not so much what makes sense in real life. If they made most weapons legal for the majority of animals their sales would plummet. So I doubt anything like that would happen.
Re EW and the permission system - that is what I thought was behind it BUT without being simplistic, on the current permission system how many weapons do you really need? If you leave out shotguns pistols bows and muzzle loaders, I think it's one, maybe two.
The 30-06 will take Moose/Brown Bear all the way down to Coyotes; that leaves wildfowl, turkeys, and wabbits which you can address with a shotgun or a bow of choice.
So while I am ready to believe the permitted weapon system is EW's way of getting us to buy more weapons with real money - you don't really have to.
Unless - you're trying to unlock the missions when you run into "you need to use this weapon to unlock this mission" issues. I'd bet tat's why a lot of weapons purchases are made.
I am not sure this gives me any answers guys except I think more value needs to be added to the $gms system including making more of the items avialble for $gms. I can sort of see a way of doing this whilst creating revenue to keep the game expanding, but I am now ay off the thread so resting it for the while.
Salute Derpy!
I did not know bout UK bow hunting laws. I'm reading about euro bowhunting and it seems 2 reasons are popular justifications. Its silent, thus associated as a poachers weapon. Two it tends to kill slow, so ethicality is a likely factor.
The EW permission system is mental bananas. But you really only need one shotgun to kill every animal in the game. Other than that the 30-06 or even .300 are good choices, allowed for most game animals.
My favorite rounds are the 30-06 and .270. I currently have a savage arms 30-06 with a 4-16x44 mil-dot sight :) amazing round the 30-06 is. I just hate the lever action :/ if it was bolt action it would be the only rifle I use :D
This is true you don't have to own many guns to get the majority of animals. But no one really has an actual best/favorite gun until they test it out. It ranges from poo poo (.308) to AMAZEBALLS (.300). And as that choice mainly boils down to personal preference, no one can really recommend the best gun for you. So you really don't know for sure until you have them all haha.
The specific weapon requirement for some missions is a slight annoyance. But... meh... its only gm$
Agreed. More gm$ items and a gm$ system that gives it any actual value.
Guess what my #1 shooting iron is - yes it's the .308
Interestingly, I was reading some deep end stuff on terminal ballisitcs yesterday, and part of the science was about how an arrow with approx 50 fl lbs of energy is actually very effective when placed right. It's a matter of using the energy in the arrow to cut and slice major blood vessels inducing rapid hypovolaemia and death - whereas rifle bullets need massive energy levels to achieve the same result. So on paper a good bow hunter can drop a deer as well as a rifle shooter.
This is only a very brief summary but if any one wants to read more Google Martin Fackler, or have a look at this learned exposition:

Last night I had one that I tried to find for three hours and could not find it. I tracked it and the trail went in a fricking circle back to where I shot it. I figure when it fled it must have crossed its old path and I picked up the trail from BEFORE I shot it, but I could not find where it actually ran off to. It just kept going in a giant circle. That's expecting too much.
Edit: and by giant circle I mean giant. As in about a half hour of real time following it. Not the little switchback that they some times do.
