270, 8x57, or 30-30? Next Weapon Purchase
Hey all. I'm trying to decide what to get next. I've already got most of the rifles except for these three. In 8x57 I already have the Mauser K98, HOWEVER, I am not too thrilled with it due to the lack of a decent scope (sight picture isn't to my liking mostly, more than the lack of anything beyond 4x magnification)...anyone got some suggestions as to what I should perhaps get? This is mostly for a bit of variety than any actual lack of weapons, so keep that in mind too - and while I'm not a big fan of the 30-06 rifle, I've heard very good thigns about the 30-30...even if at first pass it seems a bit less powerful given the range of legal animals listed.

Hmmm.

If you're already well stocked I'd say none of them, but if you have money to spend, get the 30-30 for fast firing fun.

I used the 8x57 and I was not inspired - it's like the 9.3 but has less punch and sort of sits between the .300 magnum and the 9.3 - nothing wrong with it but just not a 9.3 for killing power and not a .300 magnum for penetration and flat shooting.

Sorry if that's no help mate but happy hunting

Much appreciated, and I'll keep that in mind - as forthe 8x57, I love the cartridge, but like you wasn't too thrilled or impressed by the K98, which is why I'm considering the switch. Now, as for everything else... It's been forever since I used the .300 - might give it another shot at some point, but having been using hte 9.3 for so long, I'm not sure I'm keen on returning to being thrown out of my sights when I reload - not that I usually need a follow-up shot, but I like the opportunity for it and watching closely as the animal runs off.

Honestly the .270 is a GREAT gun!!! But if you have the .300 its redundant....

I am not a person that believe's that bigger is always better inside of this video game...
Infact Weapon sway on the bigger rifles can be pretty bad and if you cant get a shot lying down then they can be tougher to use....

Thats why I will use the .300 over any of the bigger caliber guns any day and all day! Because I crave accuracy over power.

I tend to use the .270 alot on Loggers Point and maps with medium and smaller game...
The maps with bigger game I use the .300

So to sum up of the guns you named I would recommend the .270 all day long

Hmmm - you have the same view as me - I got the K98 as I like old fashioned but in the Anschutz 8x57 it's just half way between like I said.

I shoot a lot of .308 and a lot of 9.3 so guess that also explains why I didn't go for the 8x57; it's not a bad cartridge and it's a fine rifle in the game - but just not my favourite.

The magazine in any rifle in this game is well worth it by the way - I dislike the single shot mechanism in the game for the reasons you describe, because we all know you can reload single shot rifles without breaking stance - you do it by feel not by eye - . But I have an issue with the game mechanics for head and eye positining anyway.

EDIT - oops I was answering the OP not you jfoytek. But like what you say too.

My goto atm is the 7mm.

Fast reload, lighter than every rifle and I have instadropped bears at 220m+ with it. Uses same scope you'd use on the Anshutz.

Maverick: as is mine, but I figured, since I had a bunch of leftover EMS from buying the antler rattler for the reindeer I'd pick up a weapon with the spare change.

P1ra Ev2, I'd agree that that's about all you 'need' but a little variety never hurt, and as it stands for me, I'm looking to branch out, try some nwe stuff, etc... I think I'll probably pick up 8x57 actually, since in exploring with the K98, I realised I love the round as I said, but was no fan of the gun itself...the Anschütz at least seems to be just what I want since I love my 9.3 and hte .308 when it was newer, but want something somewhere in the middle between the .300 and the 9.3 - which from my expereinces with the K98, is exactly what I'll get in the 8mm round, just on a 'better' platform.

The Kar98k isn't a bad gun. It does lack a bit punch and you can only fit one scope on it but at least you can shoot at almost anything with it. The default scope works, modeled after the real WW2 era scope reticle so it feels authentic. Unfortunately the germans weren't that smart when designing it so it's a bit bulky and placing shots with pinpoint accuracy (lung+heart shots or neck shots for example) from over 50m away can be extremely hard even when prone. I'd go for a slightly smaller or slighly larger gun depending on the variety of scopes you can use, I'd imagine anything other than the kar98k scope is better due to the design of the reticule inside.
