With 12ga single shotgun, you can hunt almost everything except biggest animals, depending on what you plan to buy, my advice would be :

-1 bigger caliber for biggest animals : 7mm, 10ga, .45-70, 9.3x62, 8x57, .50 muzzleloader (not the easiest rifle to hunt with), .340, .300 (seems to be forbidden on water buffalos though).... One of these rifles is enough so you can cover every species ingame.

-bow/xbow : They're allowed for any animals from rabbit to bison, and they're silent, though you need to hunt much closer than with rifles

So with only one weapon, and those you have for free, you may hunt everything on every maps. I would advice also you get some callers (or all of them as bundle). I would also advice you to wait for a sale so you can save money on them. Atm we got xmas sales that are changing everyday, keep checking them and you'll probably find some interesting stuff at lower prices.

Edit : if you want to hunt on some specific maps, add me to Steam and i'll share my maps with you, i believe some other members of the community will help also if you ask them.

amen

edit: just to add, since you mention "bang for buck" it might also be worth looking at the trailrunner package. Some people here are very keen on it. See if it checks out with the weapons Zzabur mentioned.

Do they still do the Beginner Pack with the pump action, .300, .270, bow, B&C gear and all that? Because it's about £30 and you can do pretty much everything.

Trailrunner pack is great, though not perfect, but as a first buy, it's interesting. You just need to get some callers to get a complete setup and even a lot of optional stuff (won't make you hunt better, but it might improve your ingame experience) :

-plenty of weapons : .300 bolt action rifle, pump 12ga and Snakebite bow are great weapons which will allow you to hunt everything, other weapons 30-06, handguns and .270 are not bad, but not necessary in my opinion.

-scopes : always good to have, the x3-x9-40mm is one of the best scope for bolt action rifle like Nosler bolt action rifles, then handgun scope is not bad, though i think handguns are not main priority as weapon.

-clothing : a full B&C suit, great for hunting deers, it will be available on every maps as long as there are deers. Not efficient on other species, but it's a good versatile camo.

-callers : always useful, only 3 in the pack, you'll need to get other as a complete bundle, so it's a loss in the pack in my opinion, as you may ended with 2 copies of the same caller.

-equipement : bonus stuff, not necessary, but useful too. A tent for spawn/inventory you can use everywhere, treestand also useful but not necessary, also 3 hunting towers, which are also great stuff, but you can hunt also without. Towers can't be bought at the store, so it's a bonus only available through starter packs or membership packs.

In the end, if you think you will play this game long term, the pack will save you a lot of money, and get you some optional stuff to have fun with. If you're looking for a strict minimum, i think you'll get a lower price buying seperately, need to check store before to be sure about that.

From what i have checked, i would compare this :

-12monthes membership (35€, 3 hunting towers as bonus) + Snakebite bow (500em$) + 7mm bullpup rifle (600em$) + complete callers bundle (2460em$), that's about 75-80€, but you got everything needed to hunt every species in the best conditions for a full year.

-Trailrunner pack costs about 50€ + complete callers bundle, you would get 3000em$ for 27€, so for 77€, you got same as above with a lot of otpional stuff. This pack is definitely worth it if you're looking for a complete hunting setup. Basic stuff, with more weapons, a tent, a treestand, some scopes and a complete clothing set, and you'll have about 600em remaining to spend in the store. If you remove the complete caller bundle, you can still easily hunt everything, though you'll probably buy some later if you play for a long time.

Also, there are a lot of discounts at the ingame store at the moment, so you can get cheaper prices for some stuff, sales are changing every day atm. I don't know if they plan to offer discount for steam packs, but recently they did a nice 20% on membership packs, and i could renew my subscription for a cheap price this year.

I am thinking about geting a membership startpack after New year. the K98K with a scope looks tempting. for slot 1. It will be intressting to see what we need for the water buffalo. I don´t think I will do any bow hunting.

The K98K is a very nice rifle, really versatile you can use it with many different animals. A 'downside' could be the classic scope doesn't have an adjustable zoom and the base zoom isn't very strong but I prefer that, makes it more of a challenge.

Bow hunting is fun mate, can be really exciting, almost scary when there's a deer so close and you know you can't mess up otherwise it will spook. Had a great hunt with crossbow+compound yesterday at Redfeather Falls, got some good bucks.

Bumbleboot the Water Buffalo isn't huntable with slugs of any calibre for some reason. I would have thought you could use at least the 10GA with water buffalo but apparently not.

I like when the animal drops like a tonne of bricks as it gets hit. I have hade a few bad experience when spend all most more time looking for the tracks of a animal. I don´t think I have used adjustible zoom.

I wounder If .45-70 is what it takes to kill a Waterbuffalo and the other one on b.. i Like classical guns.

What I have learnt from theHunter is to be patience and that shot placement is key. Wait till you get that lung shot, don't rush it and get a body shot otherwise you'll spend hours tracking the wounded animal. What Ii meant by adjustable The K98K is powerful but you still have to place shots well. The .45-70 is available for water buffalo I believe.

I know that shot placement Is the key. but are it realy enough power in a bow to kill a Red Deer instantly.

Oh definately, you can kill Moose in one shot with a bow, they are powerful and an arrowhead is a one big sharp piece of metal that can do a lot of damage. Obviously the damage reduces with range so bowhunting is done at close range.

All bows in the game will kill instantly with heart/spine/neck/brain hits.

One thing to remember. Guns like .340 and 45-70 are not permitted on smaller deer species.

When I first started this game I bought 2 weapons. .300 winmag and 12 GA pump. Those weapons served me well until I started buying guns from sales. I think everyone must find whatever weapons suit them most and use that as base. I have never been a enthusiastic bow hunter anyway.

Looks like the K98K and the .17 levelaction would make it posible to hunt anything before the Jungelmap. No bow hunting for me, I got hurt enough by trying to look for buffalo tracks in a mission. then a 45-70 if you want to hunt the last map. Are their anyway to get sell the stuff you don´t use.
