.22 Plinkington vs .17 MHR Lever Action
HI all,

I am looking to get me a varmint rifle and fell in love with both of these:
.22 Semi-Automatic Rifle Plinkington vs .17 HMR Lever Action Rifle

I like to know which of these is your favourite. Because to me they both look great, are silent and fit scopes for distance. The .17 has an edge on species for me but the .22 looks slick.

Go!

I will buy the .17 for the posibility of hunting more animals. combined with the K98k, their is no animal in the old reservats i can´t hunt. for the new Jungel reserats I need some heavy rifle. No risc of having the wrong thing in the loadout.

Got the Plinkington blue marble with a membership package, it's a nice gun. As for the .17, whilst it gives you more options when it comes to huntable animals compared to the .22, I find it particularly good for long range shots on rabbits, geese and turkeys purely because it shoots straight and you don't have to compensate much for bullet drop. However the .17 is very underwhelming when it comes to foxes (which is supposed to be its claim to fame), especially when shooting beyond 150m. For that reason it's probably the least favorite rifle in my arsenal.

Just my observations, others may have completely different opinions.

That's the problem, for me they're on par when it comes to small game perhaps with the .17 even slightly in front, but for foxes the .17 is just not cutting it as a so-called sniper rifle, and therefore I don't like it that much. If I have to lure foxes in close in order to kill them outright with the .17 then I might as well use a shotty which gives me two more bullet types for other animals. Another thing you may want to look at is the spook radius of the .22 Plinkington vs the .17HMR. I don't know the numbers outright but there are table comparisons as well as discussions on this on the main forum.

Now the .17 can also be used for bobcats. I have not shot at one with the .17 so perhaps someone else can comment on that. Again, there's some interesting conversations about the .17 on the main forum, in particular about its lack of punch, if you want more info.

Still sounds like an excellent sniper gun that doesnt do under for a .22. But in what situation do you prefer the .22 over the .17 then?

This game and its stats confuses me so that I will probably end up buying every gun! haha
The problem is that you can´t have more then two big guns and a pistol with you at any given time.

Not sure but I heard the .17 is more flat of a trajectory.

I just bought one to try it - it shoots like a laser (as it should) and has similar/identical spook range as the .22 Plink. (Which it shouldn't IRL). In the game rifle sounds like it has been moderated sadly - there is none of the satisfying crack of an unmoderated .17HMR.

When it was relesed I was disappointed that it was made in a lever action rifle - I would have preferred something along the lines of a CZ455, but in game terms it's better than the .22 as it shoots flatter, slightly bigger mag, and seems to have the same spook radius as the .22 Plink. Oh and you can go foxing with it too, so a couple of extra species on the permitted list is a bonus.

I have a goose blind set up where you can snipe at landed geese till your ammo runs out or your barrel melts. I'm happy to run it so you can bed your .17HMR in if you wish!

You can shoot any birds on the ground but, they won't score anything, except Turkeys. The number of kills you get are recorded but no score, it's like killing deer does, no score but it adds to your total.

I do it mainly as it's an easy way to increase the skill score for the weapon too.

I guess I can take the. 22 off my wishlist now and get a decent boar&big game rifle instead.

Let us know how you find it as a fox rifle as it supposedly bridged the gap between the .22 and .223. I reckon it still needs a bit of work (especially with the buffed out foxes roaming the EHR) or perhaps they could drum up a .22 magnum.

But I'm liking it a lot. Took out a few airborne birds w it. Inc a fly by goose

Hehehe - been there, done that - blasting a pheasant with a slug or roe deer with a .454. Nicest thing about the .17 is that it basically shoots where you point it.

I did hit a fox in the chest at about 110m and it ran - never found any blood to see what I hit as I waited too long before trying to track. I'll load up a game now and see if I can bag a few.
