Bear Bait, Red Feather Falls placement help.
Hi,

We're going Black Bear hunting for tonight!
(After all the shopping, wrapping of gifts and eggnog ofcourse, sigh!)

I got the Missus crazy enough to strike me a compromise.
I'll come along with doing xmas shopping and she will join me into Red Feather Falls hunting us some black bear. I am Already using the wiki for some basic reseach as its our first hunt. And it seems the local supermarket spawned some Turkey... no wait...

So we picked Red Feather Falls, an awesome place to start as it has a shooting range to keep me busy if she decides to do somelast minute xmas decoration before the family comes over and all that as well as some larger game. We intend to use a bear bait barrel before we go shopping to have the four hour timer set in but I love some advise on where the best spots might be. (I just relise i am going shopping for four hours, oh noes!!)

Any Idea?

PS
I am so happy that Friendly Fire is off, I would've been shot in the face so many times by her! And even so... She only got a .22 for xmas and I stocked up on camo and a tree stand! (imnotscaredatall)

I'm not online right now but if you google "Redfeather bear barrel" there's a YouTube video by a guy called Flinter the Hunter. It's a well-known spot that has always delivered for me. Not just black bear but also nice moose and blacktail. Getting to your treestand unnoticed is usually the tricky bit, and remember to put a tent nearby. And if you bow hunt you can take plenty of animals there.

Unfortunately I cannot give you the coordinates, they are in the video though, or hopefully someone else can give them to you or come up with some other spots. I have one more good spot which I'll post tomorrow.

Good luck!

I did see the video and got the spot, but I dont have a tent yet. So I went well east and setup 15 bait for the barrel near a small pond and a tree stand for two :8bitheart:

I seriously need to invest in some better gear.

That's my own set up. If you don't have enough tents, remember that you can fast travel to that picnice site instead.

We started in the tree stand setup earlier today with a good view on the barrel.

We counted about five different blackbear coming from all directions but I decided to aim and shoot my load once the hot blonde came along!

We fired some more shots that made us track and harvest some more, all the way to the edge of the reserve where the Missus got an instant kill on a beaut of a Black bear female.

All in all a good first run!

Bear barrels:

Site 1 (has tree stand setup)

x: -11747.903
y: -4676.136

Site 2 (has a deployable tower just across the river, bit of an overkill but I like the view)

x: -10995.203
y: -4531.614

They can both be hunted from the same tent further up the hill and they attract different bears i.e. it's not uncommon to find 6-8 at the one and the same number at the other. I normally hunt site 1 then walk over to site 2 along the river (many times there's a nice moose or rooseveldt elk along the way, so a bow will serve you well)

I've had plenty barrels across the swamp area and further up the mountain but only these two have remained because the others had a low attraction rate or only delivered small bears.

Going walkabout has also delivered a number of nice bears but beware of those big bear tracks that carry on straight only to disappear into the sea/water (usual indication of the bug is that you just never catch up with them bears). I've been caught out twice before...and so you learn walking the whole of RFF.

Hope it helps.

The only other helpful things I can add is that if you use a tower/tree stand/tripod you can easily sit and bow hunt 20-30m from your barrels.

On my set ups I try to pick locations where if a bear/hog flees, it's in view for as long as possible to take follow up shots or shoot multiple targets.

Finally, and this is not proven by science, but I put my two barrels in such a way that animals fleeing from one should generally head towrd the other feeder, and hopefully once they quit flee mode, some of them will be attracted to the feeder. Possibly.

Are those towers really worth it or are tree stands just as good?
They seem to come only w trailrunner/pathfinder and the extendion subs.

I kind of gathered most of the items in the trailrunner already during sales and I am prolly going for the Warioa bundle in not too long a time. Would I be missing out?

Not sure if it makes a lot of difference but to me it feels like the towers are a tad steadier when aiming compared to a treestand but they take 24 hrs to put up or take down, so not like a tree stand that you can carry with and put up quickly if needed. I like the elevation that a tower gives in certain places e.g. I have one in Bushrangers from where I can hunt hogs, kangaroos and goats right throughout the day with a nice 360 degree view. Again, I just set it up because I got it for free with memberships and I like that particular spot. Someone else would just lie down on one of the many hills / mountains around.

I put another tower up a couple of days ago that gives me a really nice elevated view over one of the Whitehart lakes. There's a tent next to it and travelling there I can just get in and scour for turkey, whitetail, elk, blacktail, coyote and bobcat as they all frequent that spot. None of the other stands would've given me the same height and therefore vantage point. I've also seen people use them for long distance comps but I don't really enjoy those so can't comment.

Anyhow, in the end you make due with what you have, so no, you won't be missing out. Treestand and tripod are much more versatile and quickly to set up and take down, especially if you're trying to find that perfect ambush spot. Perhaps someone else can add their own experiences.

Enjoy.
