Longbow Range Question
What is the effective range of the longbow for big game?

well the simple answer is what " you " can kill with it . its probably one of the worst in my opinion to use for range with most regular kill shots within 15-20m. you can hit further obscene distances but for regular just plain shooting that is about your range. if you get it go on Redfeather darkwood lodge shooting range practice on the animals.get the accuracy right. normal recurve bow is probably the easiest and best at range out of the natural bows.

video i did showing the natural bows

As close as possible. You will probably get a 10-20 minute wound time on an elk bull no matter how close. Unless you hit the heart of course.

So if I can hit the target, 15 - 30 meters should be doable?

Well any longbow hit on an animal in this game will kill it. It is just a matter of how much wound time before it dies, and how much tracking is involved. I know for sure that a 10m well hit body shot (no organs) takes an elk bull 20min to bleed out from the longbow. I enjoy hunting large game with the longbow. In MP hunts people think I am crazy as I take polar bears with the longbow. (multiple shots required normally)

On big game I am trying to think of a recommendation on the longbow. I have been unreliable in hitting heart shots with the longbow on elk, and brain shot is out of the question. Single lung is definitely possible, but probably not a double.

I guess, now that I think of it, my preferred hunting method with the longbow is from a treestand and doing neck/spine shots from above. That would be my recommendation.

To you original question, I will let loose on big game up to 40m with the longbow. I have renamed this method/weapon to 'scent hound training tool'.

Only instant kill reliable shot that I can do with the long bow is a 10-20m neck/spine shot from a tree stand. Some one who is skilled with the longbow can no doubt do better than myself.

Thank you, I don't mind chasing down the kills. I am looking at the longbow as a difficulty modifier. :steamhappy:

Don't let these guys hold you back. If you can hit it the longbow will kill it. https://s26.postimg.org/5a0wko1sn/Screen_Shot.jpg
well that goes for all bows doesnt it tony.the thing is in general use you arent going to be shooting it like we do on the long shots everytime.most of the time it will be short range shots of upto about 20m.

I picked it up. I have killed with it already. I am planning to do some Coyote hunting with it tomorrow with decoy and caller. :steamhappy:

Getting used to the longbow is a great way to level the Scent Hound.
