just keep at it, also if you suck at platformers I would say turn on assist mode in game settings

That's exactly the intended way of doing it, the same is true of another fence on the Windmill from chapter 4. I think doing that trick is easier to pull off for someone still going through the game tho, I might have done the same.
Nice to see the parade isn't meant to raise up from the void and phase through the platform you're standing when you fall off. I died in the same place and had an owl clip through the block, hit me and sent me to the void with no way to recover lol.
