Painting Costumes

As I was playing through Death Wish I noticed when I unlocked paints (i.e. 24 Karat Kid), when I equipped them through the pop-up menu telling me I unlocked it, it would not replace a costume if I had one equipped (i.e. Virtual Kid) and still applied to Hat Kid's model, but if I changed my costume, I wouldn't be able to replicate it until I unlocked a new paint. Does anybody know if there's any other way to make this happen (even a mod)? It'd be nice if it was an official feature.

Somebody made a Virtual Kid/Metal Paint costume on the workshop.

I know that now, I didn't just mean that specific costume though, just an example.
