What is this "snatcher coin"?

I've been seeing it mentioned quite a bit here, but I have no idea what it is. Is it something to do with getting farther in deathwish or something? I haven't even completed the lava level yet, so this could just be a case of me being impatient in figuring out what it is.

In Mafia town I saw a greyed-out coin with what looked like a smiley face on it (as opposed to rift tokens) but couldn't figure out how to reach it yet (only just started). Is that what those are?
