There is some audio of Snatcher commenting on how "the Captain's dead eyes, and musky smell reminds him of home", but I've never found the source in game, sorry this is long ',:3
Some ideas for acts included. These would take place before Ship Shape in order to allow a better understanding of the ship layout.
Act 2: Hide and Seek
This is the first mission involving Snatcher. In this mission, you have to explore the ship and capture Snatcher's minions that are terrorizing the guests and crew. You can find them in areas labeled similar to Ship Shape, but without the time limits. Chase each of them down and give em a whack. Once they're all down, another will appear with a time piece. Get them down too and that's that.
Act 3: Pirates Ahoy!
4 cat boats are slowly approaching the ship, and 4 canons are placed on outside areas of the ship. Hitting a boat with the canon pushes it back away. 3 hits destroys the boat, but the cannons have a cooldown period. You also have to go in between cannons in order to keep the cats from boarding. If one of the boats makes it you lose the act.
Act 4: Ship Shape (just showing where it would go in the progression)
Act 5: Cut and Run
The cargo hold mentioned earlier now opens, and inside you find Snatcher's crate among many others. From inside the crate, Snatcher tells you about another time piece his minions found. Then, he challenges you to a race using one of the Hat Kid clones from his boss fight. It would be from the luggage area up to the back deck of the ship on one of the pillars over the baby playpen room. This would take place at night when everyone is asleep.
Blue Time Rift: Cargo
A second blue time rift that uses the doppelganger race mechanic. This one appears in the cargo bay near where you would find Snatcher.
But your idea to put missions in-between the current acts is also nice.
I mean, who doesn't like a cat riding a ghost into space?
I was going with the idea that the friend faked his death because he wanted to be a pirate without the captain knowing.
And then someone else said something about how the friend might have died because he was trying to find buried treasure, and I was like, tha fits with my theory!
And THEN recently in the new mod idea megathread I suggested for game design purposes that the pirate ship be a ghost ship so that the player has to use the Dweller Mask to bounce on the barrage of cannonballs to get to it.
So with this new addition, the (friend) captain could have secretly used his ship as a cover for piracy, he and the crew died trying to get treasure hidden underwater, and they came back as ghost pirates that Hat Kid and the captain have to fight against later on. When the (cruise) captain realizes what his "friend" is really like, he feels ashamed at being overwhelmed by depression due to someone he saw as an idol dying when they were actually a criminal and got what they deserved, so he gains confidence, cleans himself up, and is better off by the end of the chapter because of it. He helps Hat Kid get rid of his friend's ghost for good, and looks into the distance with his hat on his chest afterword with a look of resolve on his face.
It's pretty simple to me.
Friend captain was actually pirate -> died while finding treasure, so sea cursed him -> now is cursed to relive his deeds without being able to obtain real treasure. It's a normal "pirate curse" story...but this time it serves to get the cruise captain out of his depression and back on his, uh... tail...thing?
And we get to bounce on ghost cannonballs!
