A Hat in Time

Are there any good, reliable strats to Mafia Boss EX?
Attempting to do the optional objectives on him but TBH I feel like even my first win on him was a fluke. So much of the fight feels like RNG instead of any kind of readable patterns (y'know, like most good boss fights).

So, are there any reliable strats? Or is "Use the Ice Hat and pray" pretty much it?

The fight has RNG however none of what is RNG is major

RNG affects 4 things in the fight other than "well which move will he use next?":
  • The sandbags that fall down constantly are relatively minor RNG as they will randomly fall within a small proximity of your location, pretty simple to deal with as you just need to make sure you're constantly moving just a little. I like to jump to more easily see my movements and deal with any upcoming attack.
  • it's also mildly RNG on how many rotations across the arena he'll go during his spin attack (always within a range of 2-3, 4-5, depending on how deep into the fight you are). Again, just keep moving and jumping. Brewer Hat will let you hit him no matter where you are, but you can just as easily run to him if you react well enough.
  • How many times he'll jump into the background, throw his weapons, and land on your location (same as above, 2-3, 3-4 depending on how deep into the fight you are). Again, just keep moving and jumping, hitting him when you can react to him being blue.
  • How the sandbags fall when he goes to sit with the audience. They always have a tell on which will fall, then dash slow ennough so you fall under where the first set used to be while avoiding the goons. Alternatively, just camp either corner and you'll be fine as long as you move right after.
There are several resources you can look at to know the fight better.

The boss does have readable patterns. However if I try and describe it here it would just look like the terms&conditions for an Activision game

Thanks for the detailed response, I appreciate it! I'll give the guide a look. Fighting the boss with the sandbags makes it feels so bad sometimes, but TBH I don't feel that the boss is poorly designed, more just that there's a trick I'm not getting. I'll give your guide a read and see how it helps!

NP, though I've added another boss guide as well in case you dont find mine too helpful (I'm kinda crud at explaining things imo), plus other viewpoints can help as well!
Death Wish is formidable and sometimes seems downright unfair, but once it clicks on how to handle something, it cowers before you

Just had another go at him using your tips. Wasn't able to not miss a cue, but I was able to beat him much more solidly. Dunno if I'll ever attempt No-Hit 'cause I'm awful at that kind of thing but I definitely feel more confident in my ability to at least hit him without missing a cue now.

TBH I HATED Death Wish at first, but now that I'm trying to give it patience and actually learn it, it is surprisingly very fun. I still get salty at it from time to time, but after taking a deep breath and coming back to it, I start having fun again. It really isn't as bad as I and others originally made it out to be, it just requires patience. The only part of DW that actually sucks IMO is the 3-lives mechanic and 5-minute cool-down on some of them; THAT stuff is bullcrud, lol.

Be sure you utilize Brewer Hat, it can hit him pretty much from anywhere, so if you don't feel confident you can make it to him in time, consider using it (though iirc mafia ball does not time out the objective).

Yeah, DW very much requires some growing pains for the player, as the entire rest of the game pretty much teaches you that this is a no-challenge game with smooth progression. Death Wish was made specifically to fight against that mindset and it really shows. I too didn't feel too comfortable with it initially, but now i've pumped over 200 hours into the mode just goofing around haha. But yeah, the lives and cool-down mechanic is really dumb, and it used to be on several of them too, but they changed it thankfully.

I was using Projectile Bade to hit him, but it's waaaay too inconsistent for my tastes (plus Mafia Boss had the weird 2D thing but doesn't lock you into left and right, so it's easy face the crowd and whiff). Brewer's Hat seems to be the way to go from what I'm reading.

I'm thankful they removed the lives mechanic, yeah. They are unfortunately still on collapsed rifts, though, which bums me out because the speedrun rifts are my favorite ones to do (I LOVE the Train Rush and Subcon Well DW, camera and weird collision issues aside, lol). Luckily, though, if you P&T them and then reset them, I THINK it gets rid of the lives counter and cool-down, so my plan is to use P&T runs on them for practice and then reset them for the "real" runs.

Eek, yeah, i never found Projectile Badge too helpful. Some people swear by it but i feel its long charge time mixed with lockingn you into place (and the 2D is actually just 3D with walls around you, so you could fire into the crowd). Brewer Hat locks onto Mafia Boss so you can throw it if you're facing him even a little bit, doesntn need perfectly facing at him.

The cool-down/lives are removed simply by beating the mission, though if you reset the contract I think it acts as if you never beat it before. Unsure as I've not really tested that. Worst case, just blitz thru the level ignoring bonuses until you beat it oncnee and it'll be less painful that way

I finally beat Mafia Boss without missing a cue, lol. Is 100%ing that one required to unlock anything, by any chance? Debating whether or not I wanna no-hit him.

Also cleared Snatcher EX. Easily my favorite DW so far, right next to Quality Time with Snatcher. He has readable patterns, little RNG, and TBH the fight being in 3D and not the weird Mafia Boss 2D-but-not-really fight was really nice, ha ha. Super fun fight, and the bonuses look waaaaay more fun to actually go for than some of the other DW bonuses. It's ironic to me that Mafia Boss feels so much harder than Snatcher.

Any attacks you're having trouble with in... well, they both have bonuses that limit health, so... okay, any attacks you get hit by too often with Snatcher EX or Mafia Boss EX? I got stumped on how to avoid at least one attack during both of them, so I figured that you could have attacks like that.

You don't have to 100% most if you don't have to. To unlock all of DW you just need 70 stamps total, how you get that 70 is up to you. That said, there's an achievement for getting all 114. One Hit Hero is tough but manageable. Personally I came to really love the fight after attempting it even if it did take me 200 deaths and 3 hours to do, and it also made what was to come a hell of a lot easier

Snatcher EX is superb. Well, Snatcher himself is great anyway.
I'd definitely agree that Mafia Boss EX is probably the hardest of the 4 when going for bonuses, though that's also just the nature of One Hit Hero. Just wait though, you ain't seen nothing yet.

I know we're probably over this, but I'll say it anyways:
Each move has a different strategy to avoid it, you just have to be able to react quick enough to realize what move he's doing and how to avoid it before it's too late. The RNG keeps you on your toes, but being on your toes would allow you to avoid all the moves in time.
Also, no other boss has a one-hit hero bonus, and Snatcher is the only one with the "don't drop to 1 HP" bonus.

The guide Midouri posted above pretty much helped me figure out how Mafia Boss works. Sandbags aren't nearly as bad as they seem, as there's a way to manipulate them and play around them. I'm not good enough to 100% manipulate where they go, but with practice it is possible to do so.

Snatcher's attacks are all about positioning and being aware of what he's gonna do and how his attacks work. The only ones I had an issue coming up with reliable strats for were the attack where he's start tracking you with the fire pillars (the purple timed ones, not the red chasing ones), and sometimes he'd just give me a pattern where the screen is covered with shockwaves. While nothing of his is truly unavoidable, there is the chance he'll go from things like the potion + fire pillars into the chasing fire pillars, which cause all peck to break loose and make the arena a minefield. TBH a lot of Snatcher's attacks can be avoided by well timed jumps and understanding when and when not to double jump and panic dives to stall air-time if the shockwaves start to pile up. The attacks you want him to give you are his minions and the attack where he pops out of the ground, as those are incredibly easy once you get them down. The minion one can do weird things but as long as you pay attention to where he starts the first fire pillar and run away from it, you should be okay.

I believe you refer to the attack where he repeatedly spawns three purple circles at once that turn into a colorful pillar of hurt with shock waves. My advice for that attack is to:
When you notice it's started, hurry towards the arena center (right outside the Snatcher circle)
Every time some pillars are about to boom, double jump and move towards a pillar (second jump when the pillars explode)
The pillar stops being harmful a little bit before it disappears, so use that to land inside it
You may have to actually plan your first one or two landings if those circles weren't really close to the center, but otherwise, landing where shock waves just appeared with the circles so close to the middle will let you almost always land somewhere safe. When strategies like that won't work, try to find places where no shock wave is and land there.

Interesting! I'll keep that in mind for attempts at the bonus objectives.
