Theory: Why Hat Kid Doesn't Speak To Any Other Characters

Okay, so for I while I've found it interesting that Hat Kid isn't entirely a silent protagonist, but yet (as far as I can remember) never speaks to any of the other characters. Like when she first meets Mustache Girl, Mustache Girl asked her what her name is, but even though we know Hat Kid can talk because she said little things like "Boop" when pushing buttons and counts when collecting tickets, she doesn't respond. Then Mustache Girl says something about her being more of a fighter than and talker, but I dunno if that's really the answer.

Anyway, I was just thinking about this again now, and something just occurred to me. Hat Kid is technically an alien, right? So it wouldn't be far fetched to assume that on whatever planet she comes from they speak a different language. Obviously, we'd still be able to understand her because we're playing as her, but what if the reason she doesn't speak to any of the other characters is that, while she can understand them, she doesn't actually know the language well enough to speak it?

It's not a super complicated theory, but it would be interesting if that was the reason. What do you guys think? Does anyone else have theories as to why she only talks to herself (and I guess other Hat Kids in multiplayer)?

I wouldn't go so far. If you played the game through and connect intro and outro of the game, it is quite obvious (spoiler ahead):

As the makers used the same basic idea from the old "Super Mario Bros 2", the whole world and everything in it is just a crazy dream of a cute little girl. You see her awakening at the beginning, and in intro outro she sleeps, with dolls of the creatures at her side you met in her dream. But she never was awake, the whole time. The awakening is a part of her own dream.

So she is not an alien nor is she really talking. Do you hear yourself talking in your dreams? Most of the times you are just thinking that you talked - at least it is that way for me - but a dream is most of the time just like watching a movie and you are dragged along with it. Your ego self is not mirrored correctly like in real. And that is my theory of why the developers made Kid not really talk. It is kind of a style to express the dream thing. Also it is not necessary to do so for the concept of the game.

The reactions you can do for communicating with other players on coop or online party is an exception that needed to be done.

I do not find any relyable source about this, so I can't tell if it is canon or not. But, it doesn't change much for me also. As long as their current "lazy cop out" is there as it is, they imply simply what it does right now for me. And it gives everything in between the best explanation why everything is more than crazy ;)
Any other fan theory I read out there does make little or no sense at all.

So I stick to my one as long as they don't change anything in-game or present us an official lore about AHiT. But thanks for pointing this out. Always nice to think something over :)

I also wouldn't say theories like OPs are "out there" because it is a theory that is built on the rules of the in-game world, instead of trying to limit it to reality.

I am not quite a fan of discord, but thanks for sharing this screenshot.

Then it seems that the creators messed quite up if they put the scenes the way they did in the game and not meant it to be a dream.
Or to explain it another way around: if a car is red, it stays red for me, even if the constructor is telling me it is meant to be blue. So it remains red for me until they finally paint it blue.

Either way I really enjoy the game

Putting a scene of her in bed at the beginning and the end of the game doesn't mean it was all a dream. It's not the developers fault you assumed that, but either way that's not really related to my theory. Even if it hadn't already been debunked the dream thing is only a theory so doesn't count as a contradiction to mine.

Also, I know a character doesn't have to talk, I just thought it'd be fun to theorize on. Especially since Hat Kid is a unique case of not being completely silent. I personally think its more fun to to think of Hat Kid as an actual alien anyways. Makes people come up with all sorts of interesting (even if some of them are really out there) theories. Saying its a dream is boring, because then anything unusual can be explained with "Oh well, it's just dream." instead of it actually having some interesting meaning behind it. That's why it's generally frowned upon to make a story take place inside a dream.

The real reason she doesn't speak in that occasion is that she is using a hitman-like tactic called "blending in without revealing much of your own identity". She's doing her best to avoid raising suspicions about her own identity as an alien not only by the perspective of the in-game residents but as a species itself (it is confirmed in the game manual that despite her human-like appearance, she isn't actually human). By pretending to be a true human, she can safely proceed with her own mission of rescuing her fuel.

Devs do stuff like this intentionally so people will keep generating fan theories and thus creating perpetual buzz for the game.

It’s the same reason Toby has the protagonist(s) in Undertale fall into the Underground, which would likely kill them in a realistic setting.
