A Hat in Time
Is a controller required to play?
Or is it highly recommended? My controller is at a friend's house but I wanna play, will the keyboard controls make me want to blow my brains out?

As usual it isn't required, but these kinds of third person games are way more comfortable to play with a controller due to the analog camera and movement controls.

Controller or you're not playing it right.

Not really. Mouse and keyboard works perfect!

Don't listen to people who've never tried it. I was hoping to use a controller as I'm used to games like this being on console, and I'd never considered PC controls, but the game came out and my controller wasn't at home, so I figured I'd at least see what the start was like even with a non-ideal control scheme, and... man, I was completely turned on to the power of mouse control in platformers. Instead of awkwardly pivoting the camera and lining it up before each jump, as all of the controller-using Youtube playthroughs I've seen do, you can completely fluidly control it seamlessly during movement without ever needing to stop and consider how to rotate it. You can pull it up in a jump to get a better sense of when you're above something, keep it moving as you play to give paralax depth cues, and prepare for changes in direction without ever needing to stop and think about how you want it positioned. Frankly, it's an almost universally better control scheme than a pad - the only exception is when the game tries to be "helpful" by locking your camera at certain points, at which point you're stuck with 8-directional movement and the mouse doing nothing. Apart from that, though, it's sublime. When Odyssey comes out, I'm going to be spoiled and need to readjust.

One thing you will want to do, though: go to HatInTime\HatinTimeGame\Config\Gamepads\Keyboard.ini , scroll to the bottom, and rebind Hat_Player_Crouch and Hat_Player_Badge_Activate to the extra mouse buttons (button ID 5 and 6 for MB4 and MB5.

The game *feels* better with a gamepad since it's going for the style of a 6th gen platformer like Super Mario Sunshine, but it *controls* better with the keyboard and mouse, especially once you disable the mouse smoothing. I could play it either way, to be honest.

I prefer controller for this kind of games, because there are more than 12 buttons to push during the game, and it have to be handy... :) It's not just a simple fps with run-jump-shoot-open options only.

Highly reccommended.

Compared to WASD, where you only have 8 directions and binary input (either run at full acceleration or stop running), in controller you have 360 directions and adjustable running acceleration by pushing more or less the left hand stick in the desired direction.
Camera rotation speed through the right hand stick can be adjusted in the options menu.

This is especially reccommended for bullet hell sections or closed boss arenas (such as Snatcher's or Directors'), where you have absolutely no camera control.

Maybe.... maybe not...

Both mouse+keyboard and controller are perfectly fine. Neither's better than the other. Its up to what you prefer.

The 8 directional controls never bothered me at all personally. I haven't played on controller since I don't have one that Steam natively supports afaik and I never felt like I would've had a better experience using a controller tbh.
