My personal theory is that they realized with only 6-7 acts per chapter there was no real way they could fit the original idea behind the Subcon Forest and be satisfied with it so they needed to downsize the idea. (OG Subcon was Moonjumper, Queen Vanessa and Snatcher all fighting over ownership of the forest, seems like you would've been helping the Moonjumper from some of the footage they shown)
So they made Snatcher the main character of the chapter as well as the 'quest giver' and kept Queen Venessa's Mansion mission and removed (almost) all instances of the Moonjumper lore. Shame if you ask me because his design and theme were all really good but these things happen I guess.
My question is why the Moonjumper and not, say, the Snatcher was cut?
I'm also going to throw in a suggestion for a Chapter 8 of revisiting Subcon here too, since my thread containing the original suggestion got no attention (might be due to the fact it was mainly focused on a way for New Game+ to play out and return the exploration of the game from the beta.).
Oi, there WAS a sentence here predicting an edit, but that edit has come! Spoilers for Chapter 3, since it's easier to explain the overall plot of the suggestion by telling spoilers.
First, I want similarities to the original chapter.
You still make contracts, but this time, you're not selling your soul and instead the Snatcher is legally obligated to give you Time Pieces.
You still enter the Manor.
There are still statues for people to say "Peck you!" to.
Alright, let's look at the potential lore:
Moonslicer is attempting to put an end to the Snatcher. Moonslicer is succeeding since he can turn the Moonslicer blue. I'll leave this open ended so the devs still has wiggle room to think of a story, though I want it to end with the Snatcher empowering the Kiddo with the ability to take 16 hits during the boss fight, and have it be an absolute bullet hell, about as much stuff as Touhou typically has. On top of a tower surrounded by smaller towers where Moonslicer will destroy some.
Remember what I said about you entering the manor again? Throw that out the window, because replace it with a castle with five floors, the basement being the cut third floor from the manor. (retextured and remodeled for a more castle feeling, but keep the newspapers everywhere.) Instead of the shadow puzzle you cut the third floor due to, have it be a maze with Vanessa where you need keys from multiple floors in order to unlock the main door in the basement.
Return the mail minigame, but reskin it so you're being a vandal towards Moonslicer's village... Speaking of which...
Have Moonslicer take over Subcon Village, mind controlling the minions so it's a true successor to Moonjumper.
(Also dear devs if you see this:
Please say "Moonsplicer cut himself into pieces, Moonjumper was his rolemodel" if you say no. :3)
For a more indepth reason ,if I had to guess, probably because they had Snatcher developed more than the Moonjumper before the cut (Moonjumper must've been cut pretty early on because his art never progressed beyond the 2D placeholder sprite, they never worked on a 3D model for him) and generally fit the whole spooky forest aesthetic better than Moonjumper.
