Yes, Vanessas manor could be called baby's first hide and seek horror game.

It's got loud noises.
It makes your screen basicly unwatchable whnever the monster is in view.
And it has hiding mechanics.

But over all is fairly easy since you can see the monsters shadow through the wall and they're pretty slow.

Ironically for being beginner-level in terms of difficulty, and lack of any actual jumpscares or gore, it is, in fact, one of the scarier examples in recent memory.

It's quite freaky, but no real jumpscares, as the other comments have said. The normally unshakable Hat Kid being scared probably contributes to the feeling the player gets.

That, the fixed camera, the dark manor itself, the thunder, constant psycho strings, Vanessa herself either taunting Hat Kid or attempting to lure her out (WITH THINGS KIDS MIGHT LIKE, MIGHT I ADD, WHAT THE HECK!?), Vanessa herself being borderline incomprehensible compared to the rest of the cast in addition to being an invincible one-hit-kill enemy...all contributing factors. You don't even need jumpscares at that point, though apparently there's a painting somewhere that changes to Hat Kid with a Nightmare Face, but I wasn't exactly focused on looking around, if you catch my drift.

The picture is in the nursery on the wall. It starts out with no head, then gets Hat Kid's head with no face, then adds a creepy drawn-on face.

...That decription is oddly creepier than the one TVtropes gave...
There is a way to skip the section in the cellar...

speaking of beginner level difficulty, I get laughs when we stand at the opposite end of the dining table.

I'd say my biggest fright came from my first attempt at it. I did not know Vanessa was invincible, or that she one-shot you.

I figured out it was stealth right quick the second time around.

"There is a way to skip the section in the cellar..." I actually know about that skip and used it on the second playthrough. Though, personally, I feel that unless you have a severe heart condition or something, it's something that needs to be experienced at least once, after which, by all means skip (in my case, simultaneously out of fear AND because it's hilarious to think about).

Incidentally, I did not die once in this section, partly because I saw "Hide" as a command and instantly figured out what kind of section it was (thank you, Horror game Let's Players), and partly because I was hiding repeatedly even when she was not in the room due to sheer paranoia.

Honestly, I praise GFB for that because it supports speedrunners and the faint of heart. Vanessa's manor is pretty boring if you've practiced it a thousand times and skipping it would save time. The faint of heart simply can't do that, due to being scared of being spotted.

As do I. Like I said, it's hilarious to think about the possibility that Vanessa's just waiting on the other side of the cellar door for her next victim, thinking to herself: "Aaany minute now..." as Hat Kid is yoinking the Time Piece. And yes, very good for speedrunners and the faint of heart. (Seriously, though, that Vanessa bit needs to be made into fanart. Lol.)

"Vanessa needs her statues... BOO! Oh, nothing there. That kid'll be here next minute... definitely."

Anybody can do a creepier description than TVT.

Saying that, as I'm the loser who wrote that entry in the first place. Actually slightly weird to see someone mention that particular entry.
