A Hat in Time

Hat Kid
POSSIBLE SPOILERS
I was wondering, what do we even know about her?
All we know is that she lives in a spaceship and is probably a time lord, but why? She's just a little kid right? How or why is she so athletic and powerful*? Why does she live alone in a spaceship, i mean, SHES A ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ CHILD
But most importantly, what is her actual name?

Will we ever have more lore about her? Its obvious she's not related to anywhere she goes in the game, since nobody seems to know her and she doesn't seem to know anything or anyone in it
What are the time pieces? They can pretty much control time and space, why is it that she had like 70 of them at her disposal? I DON'T UNDERSTAND ANY OF THIS

All we really know is she gets real sick of people double crossing her, Old people really freak her out, She's not an alien at all and the languge she used to sign her contracts is made up since she clearly knows how to write in english.

She dosent belive the conductor is a bird, She loves being a diva and is scared of singing.

And thats about all I got for fact about her personality.

Chances are she's actually a child, But wierdly the game begins with her getting out of bed and her toybox already has enemies and characters from the future in it, And with her ambigious get "Home" objective it seems to me like she may be lucid dreaming and is keeping a dream diary, which she can read in her pillow fort in her dreams, But thats just a theory I have.

The devs once posted a picture with Hat Kid and beer and said something like "she's not allowed to drink that, because underage" so that confirms Hat Kid is literally a kid once again, although true age is a mystery for us.

What about dream theory, I was used to think about that too, but it feels like too weak story (like "put anything in and say it's imagination of protagonist", lazy design), doubt it is real thing. The truth must be much deeper tho.

I just hope that theory doesn't become reality, its literally just like the Ash in coma theory from Pokemon
The devs have confirmed that it's not an "it was her dream the whole time" situation: https://i.imgur.com/K7Teps1.png

Other than that, she clearly is an alien to the world the game takes place in at least, and there's no indication that the language she writes her signature in is made up. Her bizarre technology and abilities etc suggest she's not from Earth either, you know.

I don't know why there's debate whether or not she's a child, she does act like one and is called Hat Kid. But if you want "evidence", after the well mission, she writes in her diary: "Shouldn't grown-ups usually be keeping kids OUT of wells or something?" Another confirmation that she is indeed a child.

There are ways to do dream stories that arent complete cop-outs you just have to be actually creative and give them consquence outside of the dream. Or I guess you could go for the dream/mind invasion route as well but I don't see that one very often.

The Ash dream theory is a god awfull story wise because absloutely nothing matters even to the protagonist themselves since they'll never wake from the coma, Thats not bad because its a dream story its bad because its a bad story, You could get just as bad results with interdimseonal story telling.

Good news is that was only a theory, My actual want is its time travel her "Home" is actually right where she is it's just either in the far future or past of the planets she's currently next to, It's possible those toys were made in the future, either by future denizens or by her guardians/parents, And since her guardians/parents are from the future they could probably give her advantages if not technologicly or magicaly than geneticly which would explain her platforming expertise.

Also her wierd as all get out name, [Though i'm convinced it's not her name since she rwrites perfect english.] Who knows what human writing and languge could possibly evolve to if we existed well over a million more years.

Or maybe i'm just hopefull to see these characters again and possibly their decendents since the ending could be seen as leaving them for good.

Thats what I hope though, But it's probably a dream story since the toy thing could be seen as a stretch, And the getting out of and into bed thing is an ill omen of it.

EDIT:

Never mind then! Hopefully it's time travel and we can see the consquences of our meddling then.

Btw, there is one small detail I want to bring attention to. At the very start cutscene, when Hat Kid gets to the screen and checks out the travelling progress, start point is an... explosion? What kind of catastrophe or whatever it is could have happened?

Big bang theory?
It's not just that her technology is advanced, it's also strange. Her spaceship is made of wood, the fuel is hourglasses, her computer uses primitive vacuum tubes or something.

As for her name, maybe it's impossible to write it using the Latin alphabet. And it's her signature, people usually write those always the same way.

Yeah, technologies of Hat Kid are really strange. The only real progress is time hourglasses fueling the ship: it's not something we could do now, even if we had some. Notice how Cooking Cat says something like "Well, I kinda imaginated the alien stove to be more progressive".

Also the reaction for every relic she recreates is quite interesting. Being offended by UFO and thinking markers are illegal weapon of vandals.

It *might* be that she is from parallel universe (came in this one because of time paradox or something), so her nation progress story is different. The alien spaceships not being round and cow-capturing, markers non-existant, but time piece syntesis and special wood for spaceships.

Probably worth noting that she refers to the denizens of the planet as "Earthlings", so she definitely isn't from even a parallel Earth. As for the whole "powerful" thing, true, she is very skilled at parkour and whatnot, but her actual physical strength is very weak. So weak, in fact, that if she tries to punch anything before getting the Umbrella, even the minor bird enemies, all she succeeds in doing is hurting her hand and hopping about wildly from the pain. "Weak, but Skilled" would be the trope here.

Personally I think she does write in her whatever language, even in her diary- But because we read her diary through her, and she can obviously read her own language, then we can obviously read it.

Actually she writes perfect english on one of those very contracts with no issues before signing her name which is why I said that.

But don't worry because your still right I think, Going back into the game and looking REAL close at that blurry mess I'm pretty sure it's still in the same languge and translated back to us by her.

So that probably is her name, And she understands atleast two differnt languges... Which makes sense since how would she read the contracts otherwise?
Moe Magi Maxima Nov 4, 2017 @ 8:38am
Headcanon: that is, indeed, her name she's writing, but it's unpronouncable by Earthling standards. Kinda like "Geno"'s actual name is unpronouncable, so he(?) took the doll's name for convenience's sake (something "Hat Kid" does not do, as she doesn't really seem to care).

She does know English (or whatever language you are playing with so it's better to say she knows Earth's language) which means the she either was on Earth before her initial fall or that she speaks the same language and just has a really elaborate signature.

You guys are looking too deep into this. not that I don't understand you. the game is far from finished. there will be new major contents next year. only the devs know what Hat Kid's canon really is.

there are also cut content from the alpha/beta builds, like the umbrella actually belonging to her. it also fell from the sky similar to the 40 hourglasses. the only major difference is that it made huge damage to the fountain where the umbrella landed. also if you haven't noticed, dweller mask works on the Manor. it's not a hat per se, and indeed it wasn't a hat in the previous builds. There's also Moonjumper, which is mentioned in 3rd floor of the Manor, and this is cut in this game. anyway she's way more powerful in the previous builds compared to this one.

rant: if anything her prologue would actually work for a cartoon series. every episode would end with her getting the hourglass. episode will mostly contain her encounters with different species, race, ethnicity etc. heck, it can even be a 2-part or 3-part episode just like Detective Conan.
