Discord causing fps drops ?
Hello there,

So I've experienced drops since a long time ago (see my last post https://www.reddit.com/r/RocketLeague/comments/ek4z0y/my_game_is_stuttering_frame_drops_skipping_any/ ) and lately, I actually found it was related to Discord.

So those red spikes appear on the F10 menu. They usually happens in a short moment of time (kinda grouped). It actually becomes worse over time. When it happens too often, I have to restart Discord, but it is still there while freshly restarted, just less.

- I already tried to turn off Hardware acceleration and its not fixing it

Intel i7 9700K CPU

Gigabyte GTX 1080 8gb GPU

16 gb corsair RAM

As you can see, my PC should be good enough to run a game like Rocket League 100% smoothly, even with some 3rd programs running in background like Discord.

Anybody experienced any similar issue and/or actually know what to do about it ? Im pretty desesperate :( Any help would be more than welcome..!

Thank you for your help guys!

Hello. I don't know what F10 menu is doing can you explain?
I heard of Discord overlay but wasn't trying it. Maybe it's interfering with Directx 11, 64 bit version of the game?

Try to launch game with Steam lauch options:
-dx9

I think it's good to report this issue to Discord too.

Hello man, thank you for your answer.

The F10 menu is actually a graph that pops in Rocket League, showing many specs over time, like FPS.

My overlay is disabled in discord, I never enabled it!

Unfortunately my problem was there before the update of dx11, so it's not a directx version problem.

I've started a ticket with Discord some weeks ago, they are pretty slow to answer and they always ask me the same thing to try fixing the problem, it just become an infinite circle if you know what I mean.. :/

But still thank you for your tips!

Yes, I know what you mean with Connectivity graphs, Performance, etc.

In that case I don't understand what's wrong with Discord?

You can try Submit Ticket to RL Support to help them investigate issue. Describe them situation and send them msinfo32 file.
https://support.rocketleague.com/hc/en-us/articles/360021494713-Welcome-to-Rocket-League-Support
Guide here :
"1. Press the Windows key + R
2. Type msinfo32 in the dialog box and hit enter.
3. Click on File
4. Select Export... from the drop list.
5. Name the file so that you can easily find it.
6. Attach the file to your next reply to us."

Yeah I had a long conversation with RL support, which I already sent them msinfo32 file and everything. It turned in loop as with the discord support.

I'll try to explain more in details what's happening. So when I'm playing with discord opened, I often see some red spikes drop for a milisecond or so from 250 to 50-70 fps. It is actually noticeable even without graphs, and it is really annoying. It usually happens when something "fast" happen, like a ball touch, fast camera turn or something like that, but not everytime! I had no clue for a while, I've did so many things to solve this issue. Finally, I noticed when I close discord, that those drops are 99.9% fixed. So I assume it comes from Discord. Having Discord while playing RL is a must for me, all my friends are using it for comms etc. I also noticed that over time, it seems to get worse and the fps drops occurs more often. I, then, have to shut down Discord and open it back and it's getting better, and then over time it get worse again...

It's a very weird problem and there's some people that seems to have similar issue (Freakii (RLCS pro) as the same thing).

I've tried many things on discord, pre-released version, canary version, turn of HW acceleration, no overlay, etc etc). Same thing seems to happen with a google chrome browser opened.

I have exactly the same problem! Mybe it's the BIOS-version I'm not sure yet but I made a BIOS update and the day after it's the first time I have evidence of the FPS-Drops happening. Since I did not play RocketLeague for a while I didn't connect the dots until now (since we do have the same processor).

My hardware and the version I updated to
i7-9700K
RTX 2070
ASRock Z390 Extreme4
BIOS-Version/-Date American Megatrends Inc. P4.30, 29.11.2019

Also the problem is happening on the Epic Store Version (I tested it but normally play on steam)

I'll try to upgrade the BIOS since the downgrade fixed another issue which will then probably come back

Did you fix the problem?

Sup man. I think nothing could really completely get ride of those stutters from Discord except getting some newer CPU's like the last 12th/13th gen from Intel or 5xxx/7xxx Ryzen from AMD.
This is so weird because I've had issues with my 9700K and I had a backup PC with 2700X which was completely fine. 9700K supposed to be much better than 2700X. Then, I just upgraded last month for 13600K and it is much more fluid with many other applications open.
I remember at that time that higher RAM frequencies helped. Make sure you're on XMP profile in your bios. Other than that, couldn't tell and I tried so many things tbh lol.

Hope this will help.

For me the problem was also related to the polling rate of my mouse. Reducing it from 1000 to 250 or 500 gave me less stuttering. I don't know why this is effecting the performance, since on other PCs the problem is not present. But I just lowered the pollingrate and could then play better.
RL-Support could not help me eigher

So Im not sure how many people this fix will help but here is my problem and my solution. Noticed a weird lag every time I was in a party with a friend on discord. Could not get rid of it for the longest time. I turned off discord's overlay feature that lets you know when someone is talking while discord was minimized and it fixed the problem. Hope this helps someone.
