I just hope it's not some silent bugged update from either Steam or Psyonix. Well, wherever it's from, I'd like it not to prevent me from playing completely.
@Natch As such, I couldn't test to try to reproduce your findings.
EDIT: There's been a 12 Mb patch flying just now, you should see if that fixes it before trying to reinstall.
I also tried unplugging every other peripheral I had attached to the computer to force it to recognize the SC. No joy.
I'm having the same problem;
Yesterday afternoon my Steam controller worked fine, then yesterday evening it worked in all other games but not in RL. I found a video that suggested changing Steam Input in game settings to auto which I did and then my controller was working BUT all of my key binds I had set up in RL were replaced with Big Picture Mode (BPM) controller settings.
As it was late I thought I'd change the key binds in BPM today - just checked the controller was still working in RL but no! Now, even though it recognises there's a Steam controller there, the controller no longer works at all in RL!
Great stuff! When are Steam/RL gonna stop messing around with something that wasn't broken and breaking it in the process? When's Steam gonna stop trying to force BPM on us when it's a totally awful system (in my opinion)?
When's this problem gonna get fixed now?
Also to add - Big Picture Mode key bindings don't allow you to have more than one action per button! Great stuff! Forcing us to use it and it's not up to the job!
I suppose you could try doing a distro change but I'm not really looking to do all that work for one game (at least not till 19.04 is released)
Nothing was working for me, so I decided to test different controllers. Turns out both my PS4 and Switch Pro controllers work fine, like nothing ever happened. But my Xbox controllers still aren't recognized normally and only work for player two.
So whatever they broke in the controller functionality, it seems to be specific to xbox controllers. Not sure if a 360 controller would work better than the XOne controllers I've got, but if you're having problems I would try switching to a different console's controller.
Steam Controller doesn't work right either
I logged the issue with Steam Support and below is the response I received. I have followed the steps and find that it does seem to sort the problem out - hope it helps you guys:

Hello!
Ok, let's see if I can help out, and help explain whats going on.
First and foremost, the recent Rocket League update did set the Steam Input API to the recommended, default configuration, but we can still set it back to the previous version, and set the controller as a standard controller, rather then functioning off of the Steam Input API. Once we get that set in Steam, we will also need to set the option correctly in Rocket League.
Let's use Big Picture Mode for these steps, just to make it easier. So, with your controller plugged in, and In Big Picture More, please navigate to Rocket League in your Library. Once you've selected it, please select Manage Game, and then Controller Configuration. From here, you can press X, and navigate community configurations. For testing purposes, select Templates, and select the first listed template.
Now, with the controller set to that, let's launch the game. You may need to navigate the menus using a keyboard and mouse until we fix the settings. Open up the Rocket League Settings menu, and navigate to the Input tab. You should see an option labeled 'Steam Input (BETA). Please ensure this is set to off.
Then, please re-test the issue!
