An easy example on offense is when a player makes a pass in front of the goal and then heads back to mid-field so a teammate at mid can move up more safely to take a shot on their pass and if that player misses then the player who rotated mid can then possibly move back up to take a followup on the rebound while the player who just shot is now moving back and so on.
On defense the easiest example is when you make a clear you can't follow up on or that gets stuffed just circle back into net and let the player behind in net move up to either complete the clear or take the next clear attempt and repeat.
The whole point is to let your team get hits on the ball when they are in a better position to do so while you are covering the openings left by their attempt or setting up for a followup from their passes.
