C2 here
That's because the game was developed with consoles in mind.
There are a lot of games where controllers are the default input method but KB+M is a superior way to play it.
Rocket League might be one of the few games were the controller is almost as good, if not equal or better than KB+M, but the KB+M approach is still viable.
tldr: The reason more people use controllers isn't because it's better. Rather, it's because the game was marketed with a controller in mind.
People can beat Dark Souls No Hit runs using bananas as controllers. The difference here matters all that much.
Here's an article about KB + M players and they were talking about how there was more of them than ever but it still only was 3 players out of 30 RLCS starters in Season 6 of RLCS:

The article said there wasn't a single KB + M player until season 3 and then only one. The players that did use KB + M when interviewed sait they did so because they didn't have a controller when they learned to play the game, so its not that they chose KB + M because they thought it was better its just that they used what they had available and it was inconvenient to relearn on a controller later so they kept using what they were already good at.
