If I remember correctly, the visible rank points lag behind the hidden MMR, and the game tries to equalize the two via win/losses. So when you win more points than you lose, it generally means your MMR is higher than you're currently ranked, and you're gravitating closer to that value.
That isn't necessarily the case, I was playing with 2 skilled players and got 3 points per match, playing alone I get 11 points per match. I think the points are mainly calculated with your team's MMR average versus the opponent's average. If your team's MMR is far higher you gain less points and if it's far lower you gain more points.
