PSA: Points Don't Matter (Seriously)
I'm sure you've been yelled at for low points at some point playing Rocket League.

You're probably playing just fine.

Points are not a good indicator of the value of a teammate.

For some reason, people at higher ranks STILL don't grasp this concept.

Bad things can get you points.

Frankly, ball chasing, cutting (breaking) rotation, hitting the ball with no purpose, constantly hitting the ball towards the middle of the field just to hit the ball. All of this is bad for your team, but it'll get you score points.

Demo's that cause open-nets, bumps, solid rotation so you don't get scored on, good passes, ball challenges, not-inside-net blocks (saves against teammates and some saves against other team), boost starving, pressure. All of this is good for your team, but doesn't get you points

Don't believe me? Check out some high ranked RL play. You'll frequently see teams where at least 1 player has 300 or less points. It's not because they're bad players!

No...

Since it has been implemented as it has been, then it is usually only possible to get good points if you are constantly on the ball. Therefore it rewards ball-chasing directly as every time you hit the ball you are likely to push that synthetic 'skill' number higher.

If you are watching the play of the game and rotating correctly and you are where you need to be when the 'play' is made, then it is likely that you aren't going to be the high scorer.

At the most baic level, this is a team game and you win or lose as a team. Low score at the end of the game doesn't mean that you're not 'skilled'. It sometimes mean just that you were doing what need to be done to support the rest of the team.

"Points are not a good indicator of the value of a teammate. "
Every decent players knows that. It's rather an indicator for lowbobs and noobs.

I blocked the whole game and got a lot of flanks and ♥♥♥♥. Ended up with 200 points (my mates got points for goals and passes) but even the enemy praised me for making it super hard for them. :srfist:

points are a pretty good metric for player skill though, if it wasn't a good metric there wouldn't be any reason to have implemented Score into the game, it's why the more important abilities (shooting, passing and saving) are worth more points than things like turtle goals, aerial hits and center ball, it's also why when you're playing at champ and above and then pair up with some buddies who are plat and below you're going to basically always be top of the leaderboard for your team.

I think what you're seeing (in "high ranked" play) is when people are playing in a match where everyone is very close in mechanicle ability and strategic ability each player tends to fall into a role depending on playstyle (aggressor, backup and midfield/goalie) and each one of these roles tends to accrue a very different amount of points depending on how the game is going, say you win the match, generally the aggressor and backup are going to be in the top two slots whereas the goalie/midfielder is going to be at the bottom, say you lose the match, generally that means the pressure from the other team is finding gaps in the front-line players which will usually lead to someone having 4+ saves and tons of points from clearing which usually lands them in the mvp slot, or close to it, for your team.

furthermore, score is generally divided up amongst your team in a way that's hard to put into words, if you're sub-200 score at the end of a match (low score usually means ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of 50/50s or a almost-dedicated defender btw) your teammates are going to have picked up the points you couldn't (through whiffs, 50/50s, et c.), which can make their score sometimes outrageous looking (>1200), does it mean they're "more skilled" than you? not necessarily, but if they weren't skilled enough they wouldn't have been able to take advantage of openings you've created to shoot, pass, save, et cetera and pick up those points.

A clarification here: in champ and above games it's pretty infrequent to see someone sub-300 points.

source: I play at that level.

If the matchmaking was bad, there wouldn't be any reason to have THAT in the game.

So the matchmaking in this game must be AWESOME.

Riiiiiiiiiiiight...........?

There, that takes care of that.

Yes and no. If someone's ripping on their team mates and they're bottom of the table with like 40, 50 points, for sure I'm going to use their score against them.
Pretty please with sugar, don't do that.

If they actually listen to your criticism and try to change their gameplay, you'll end up turning people into ballchasers.

I want to make a quick note: I'm definitely not saying this is the case for every case, but it is indeed possible for a player to play poorly or very well and amass lots of points, and at the same time its possible for a player to play poorly or very well and have low points. That's why points can't be a reliable and credible metric for measuring a player's performance.

It may seem infrequent to you, I won't argue what you do and don't see, but I too play at Champion level (I've been Champion 1 and above in 3v3 standard for 5 months now) and I frequently see team players with 300 or less and still grab the win. And many times they do more to support the team than the second guy up!

You can also see pro play and tournaments on youtube where players have 100-300 points with 2 minutes left in the match and even complete matches with team wins at that point level.

Because of this reason, points can't be a good metric for player performance in a match (by itself it's unreliable), you have to dial it down to what the player was doing in the match.

In other words: how you interact with your teammates and team plays heavily outweighs how many points you can accumulate.

This is so true.

you know that you can make a lot of saves but the game don't count as a save and don't give points???? this same thing apply to all the things that give points. even some assistances don't count.
