990 / 999 ping bug check-in (are you plagued by this bug?)
I've been dealing with this bug for a long time, but it's gotten so much worse in the last month. Here is what happens.

I'll be playing normally with regular ping. Then my ping will start to gradually go up over about a 7 second period, and it goes up on the screen to 990 every time. Not 999, but 990.

But, it actually keeps going up from there to 3000-5000. I know this because I can just count 3-5 seconds between keyboard input and the response on screen. Obviously it's beyond unplayable with this and all I can do is tap the keys a bit to keep me from being booted for AFK.

In the past, this lag spike would only last for 10-15 seconds before coming back down. Now it routinely lasts for 90 SECONDS.

Some of the time this happens, I won't see other players having ping issues on the tab screen. Other times I will. It seems about 50/50 chance as to whether I will notice others having flashing orange/red ping at the same time.

Also, I don't usually see others having the 990 bug. That's kind of rare, but I do see it.

I just can't believe that this is happening on my end. Does anyone else experience the 990/999 bug, and if so, how long does the spike last for you, and how long have you had the bug? Do you feel like it's on your end or the RL servers?

yup, they servers are just bogged down, during the week not as many issues but weekends have become almost unplayable.

do you have a wired cable connected to your computer when you play? are the fps stable? what server do you play on?

Yeah, I'm wired. Usually US East/West, but sometimes all servers. I haven't checked the fps, but I'm not sure how unstable fps would cause 90 second 3-5000 ping lag spikes. I'll check it anyway, though.

Make sure to select only your specific region server cause sometimes it could give you other regions. I'll wait for your fps stats. But if you have a cable connection and you're not downloading files while you're playing, you could try contact your ISP to get further assistance. Are you having this problem only on RL?

Hello, so to be honest I really want help you.
Before I was going to work I Googled "999 ping Rocket League" and although it was also issue related to controller in 2016 I want to exclude that as possible cause :

RL is the only game I'm playing right now. I don't seem to notice this with browsers.

I used to play all regions all the time. I've only recently restricted myself to the U.S., so it can't be that, because this bug is relatively new and has gotten much worse in the last month. Just a few weeks ago or so, it would only last for 10-15 seconds. Now it's up to 90 seconds.

Actually.....I guess that _could_ be the problem. Maybe I should try some other countries instead of the U.S. and see if that helps. I was thinking just in terms of physical distance and hops, but if it's actually a server or routing issue, then playing in another country might pin this down. I'll try this one tonight.

I'm on DSL right now. I did call my ISP and they did not find anything unusual with my connection or modem. And since it's unlimited monthly BW, they said they don't log connection history so they had no way to check during certain times where I had the issue.

I do have a spare modem I can try out though, to rule that out, but that might be a few weeks before I can try it. Also, since the spike lasts so long, I can actually do a tracert and ping test during the spike to see if it's affecting other things. I can also test my cell phone which uses the wifi during the spike and see if there's a delay there

Thanks for looking. Somewhere I have a wifi dongle I can try and that will weed out any issue with my NIC.

Also try to run a 15 minutes ping test with the Cmd to the google or RL servers. Or try to download another online game and see if the problem persist. It could be an hardware settings problem. I would also rule out the problem with the modem but it costs nothing to try.

Small update: It's coming up on 48 hours since my last post. I disabled the U.S. servers and selected all others and the problem has now improved significantly.

I have not had one instance of the 990 bug yet, but, it does "try" to bug me with it. Instead, it will spike up to about 500 ping for just 2-3 seconds and then come back down to normal, although 'normal' on these distant servers is still in the 150-250 range for me.

So, it is much more playable now than before, but I still have to deal with the constant "ball updates" due to my constant high ping on these servers.

So, I think that says something about either the U.S. servers or the routing to them. But I'm going to keep playing it like this for a few more days to be sure, and then I will start to trim down to the non U.S. servers that are closest to me to see if I can improve it further.

It would be interesting to see a poll of how many people see so called "connection issues" and what servers they are actually playing on. I wonder now if the U.S. has the worst servers.
