If you had to leave immediately for whatever reason, a tournament game in Rocket League isn't going to stop you if it was serious enough. I've played about 6-7 tournaments solo, all players there for both teams every time so I'm finding it hard to believe it's a massive problem. If players don't show up, that's on them and unlucky for you.
The only other alternative would be for those latecomers that can't join on first or second time because of it being full, Psyonix could introduce a substitute system. I find that hard to implement though because then people wouldn't be guaranteed a game but would have to wait to play just for the CHANCE to fill a spot if someone doesn't show up. So I think it's fine the way it is, even if it happens to me.
If there is a remote chance of needing to leave, you should not be entering a tournament in the first place, especially with people you don't know. The sanction for leaving should reflect this to a weeks suspension for entering another one, not the same amount of time until the next one is taking entries.
Would not solve it but its a start for those who leave often. I've seen it first hand and just don't enter them anymore since I got the title and the loot is not worth the grind.
Substitutes would be fine for the duration of the tournament with the reward % adjusted to reflect the time invested. A static backfill bonus should be sufficient to make it worth their while waiting as a sub. Extra XP bonus or a non-tournament crate.
Lots of things they could do, but tournaments don't make them extra cash so its not a priority.
+1
Emergencies happen so let's not waste time talking about what is and what is not included in that. That would be painful. Things happen, some people get bothered by it, some people just roll with it. I'm fine if a player is down as I find it's the most logical way to deal with it unless they implement the substitute part with the incentive of in-game currency (nice idea).
A week's suspension = If you want to kill any interest in tournaments.
If there was some way of logging serial offenders of leaving in tournaments. As in if it happens two-three times within a month then possibly can make it better for others. As I said though, I'm fine with the way it is but so far I've been unaffected by it.
Yes, if I play around 7 tournaments and both teams are full for every single game then logically for me, it isn't a massive problem. I actually said this in the last post.
I'm sorry to hear they've been terrible for you, I'm the opposite as they've worked flawlessly.
Lets face it, the vast majority of people who are declining the invite to join the tournament they entered or are just plain leaving when a couple of bad plays are made are not leaving due to a life and death situation arising. And the weeks sanction would only kill the scene if people leaving was a common. If its not common then 99% of players have nothing to worry about, however if it has such an impact it kills the mode then there are bigger problems that need to be addressed before it can be classed as sound and stable.
It is not the fault of leavin players. Epic just ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up epic. They have problems joining the servers.
