My friends who play on PS4 are gone

you will have to add their epic friends account. when you added your epic name, you should have hit add the friends. when you click that, it sent your ps4 friends an add. if you didnt, you will have to hope they hit add

My Cross Platform friends also vanished. Sad thing is I don't know some of them personally and have no easy way of contacting them to re-add them.

If I understand the article, which is linked inside the article that GrunzJr linked, correctly, the "convert platform friends" should help:

You can also quickly convert your platform friends to Epic Friends by following these steps:

1. Select Options from the Main Menu
   
2. Select Interface
   
3. Select the Convert Platform Friends checkbox

This will automatically send and accept Epic Friend invites to your platform friends
