However, a majority of Steam vets still play the game, what would be a more intresting question is why most of them still stick around and if they still financially contribute to the game.
Personally, i'm about to upload a negative review on Steam but I will keep on getting myself maliciously datamined playing the game until my friends get bored of it and move on, I don't intend to pay a single cent to Psyonix though.
Most of the reviews posted lead me to believe it's the case for lots of pre-Epic vets.
I personally quit, because I got tired of it. I had a hassle of few hours or more just to make it work without 15 FPS (heck, I even opened a support ticket, but in the end... no help for those that got f'ed up with dx9 support removal), and I feel some amount of players bailed because of this as well.
Besides, game feels... different. After 50ish matches since Epic transition I still feel nothing. No more excitement when I do nice stuff. It turned into a grind that wasn't too thought through, and they fix it as they go. It wasn't just game, mechanics, etc, but I've had my joy in customizing a car or being involved with community (as toxic as it was, it got worse).
Almost 1000 hours later, I was forced to leave it... maybe in future I do return, but I doubt I will feel the hype again.
At the time of checking it right now there are 63k steam players online (which is a lot less than it used to be before F2P where we would average 80k-100k) and there are a total of 882k players online on the game.
So yeah, less than 10% of the playerbase are Steam Players.
Based on https://steamcharts.com/app/252950
the last 30 days avg is 57,505.4 with a peak of 146,902 on steam. The only other time numbers on steam were this high was during covid lockdowns. Many people may have left over thier issues with epic and it could be that old players are coming back with ftp as an incentive knowing they will be better than the nubs but i somehow doubt that.
Pepole leaving games from major company mismanagement don't fully come back that easy.
Expect these players to leave just as quickly and have more of the active veteran community bleeding players over the issues they're already noticing.
