If there's some kind of badge or reward for winning a tournament then it will make sense to some high ranked players to let their ranks tank on purpose to make it easy for them to win tournaments.
That dose make sense to a degree, might be an argument for removing your rank from the title if its variable ranks actually competing and just have it as Season 1 Tournament Winner. I'm not complaining, just saying OP makes a point.
Even in the extras game mode its normally a handful of divisions higher than your standard rank the higher you go in those game modes you still run into players who play faster, read play better, make less errors and generally more mechanically skilled than their lower ranked counterparts.
On top of that, a lot of people get boosted at the end of the season for season rewards.
