New player looking for tips 'n' tricks
Recently started playing RL, and while I like the game, I suck rly badly. Constantly missing the ball, don't know when to toggle ball cam and when not to, aerials look like something that I'll never be able to do, etc.

So basically, do you have some advices for a noob like me?
Thanks in advance!

FYI I play with mouse and keyboard.

Watch some YouTube videos of pros, do freeplay, etc. If you are determined to get good you will get good fast. You can't get good at this game overnight.

Pick a car and get good with that car many use octane as it's well balanced. Watch tutorials, use ps4 controller if you can it's much easier than mouse + keyboard naturally. Play casual 3v3s until you get good it takes time.

  • Toggle Off the "Camera Shake" setting in the Options menu.
  • You can jump higher by holding down Jump
  • Use Air Roll when falling to land cleanly on your wheels.
  • Tap or "feather" your Boost in the air to maintain altitude efficiently.
  • Use Handbrake to turn more quickly than normal.
  • Use your forward Dodge to gain speed without having to use Boost.
  • Dodge into the ball at the last moment before impact for extra power on your shots.
  • The ball bounces softer off of your car's wheels than the body.
  • Holding Jump and Boost at the same time is the quickest way to gain aerial altitude.
  • Check out the Custom Training menu to develop your skills using drills created by community members.
  • You can build your own practice drills in the Custom Training menu.
  • Free Play Training is a great place to warm up while you search for an online game.
  • Tired of trash talk? Change your Text Chat settings to "Team Only" in the Options Menu.
  • Make it easier to tell friends from foes with the "High Contrast Nameplates" option in the Options menu.
  • Gain a wider view of the field by increasing your "Camera FOV" setting in the Options menu.
  • You can re-bind almost any button in the game in the "Controls" section of the Options menu.
  • Get creative with a variety of custom Quick Chat options in the "Chat" section of the Options menu.
  • Reduce how far your camera zooms out when hitting supersonic speeds by increasing "Camera Stiffness" in the Options Menu.

I definitely recommend the two videos shared by quickER. I also recommend searching Rocket League tips for new players on YouTube as a lot of them helped me out.

I think the most important things to learn this early on is rotations, fast aerial/jump and boost management.

Rotations - always be aware of where your team mates are, so toggle ball cam on/off to make sure you aren’t double committing. If your playing 3s and both your team mates are up, you should stay in mid in case there’s a counter attack.

Fast aerial - the ball is going to be up in the air a lot, and fast aerial is easy to learn. If you hold the jump button you will see that you jump higher than normal. Now trying holding the jump button while boosting and play around with the direction of your car while in the air. There are plenty of tutorial videos on YouTube of how to fast jump and double jump that do a better job of my explanation. Edit: Try some of the training packs from time to time and you will improve. Rocket League is a easy to pick up and play game, but hard to master.

Boost management- boost is an important part of the game, without boost you are slow and at a disadvantage. Make sure to collect boost when needed and even boost starve the operants.

Since counterattacks can be fast, I often stay in the back, but since I'm a sucker for moving around and doing aerials, so I'm more or less useless xD
Tip: Don't quit when you're losing. Playing through it and learning will not only make you a better player, but a better person as well.

Cheers.
That two videos of camera settings are gold, thanks for share

The controller or keyboard decision depends on how comfortable he is and how much experience he has with either. During my RL career I have tried switching to controller multiple times but I just can't do it, because I have barely used a controller in my life. So I decided to stick with a keyboard and now I am in C3. Both keyboard and controller have some advantages and disadvantages, so I'd say it's impossible to tell which is "easier". To the OP I would just recommend to try out both for some hours and see which one is more comfortable for you and with which you are more precise.

Last time I used a controller was back when i was a kid playing on PS1 (played stuff like Tarzan and Collin McRae Rally) so I don't think I would be any better with a controller.

Although it sucks when I have to play against good players who can just beat me effortlessly, I'll try not to leave such games xD
Just y-day I played 2 or 3 games where my teammates and enemies were waay more skilled then me so i was more or less just a spectator in that game, and got carried in those games aswell.

Sunless Khan and amustycow have really good vids among others on youtube. I would suggest just look up what you want to figure out what to do on youtube and you will find a ton of vids in relation to it...good luck and continue to have fun playing the game. :)

I also started with mouse and keyboard, but i switched after a couple hours to controller its more comfy for myself.
But there people out that destroy with M&Keyboard.

its not easy at the begining its a lot Input where you have to put something out. ( a lot musclememorystuff)

You get better no worries, just dont think you can everything intant, it takes time and practice.

i prefer to stay in ballcam permanent, i switch only if i dribble the ball on the ground and sometime to check my way to a targeted position( my taste only maybe )
Reading the Ball and Car Control is the foundation for Arials, but you get there if you practice ;)

alot good stuff have been said here by quikER;
-Camerasettings, some settings make the life easier.
-tutorials theres a lot god stuff out, about every mechanic in this game.
-mute the voice/chat if trashtalk triggers you. i prefer only quickchat and mute "special ppl"
- Check out all basic Car-hitboxes ( there are lists with all hitboxes out) and try not to switch alot at the begin, after you found "your" carstyle. i think theres 6-7 different hitboxes out, and almost every car is unique ( my opinion :D ) .
-spectacular shots are not always the most effective, they can be but not every one can special shots with every attempt.

one thing i think also is important; stay a nice player if you become a good player ;)

good luck and cya out there :rloctane:
